It appears Fast and Furious is once again rearing it’s head…  Just as BO decides he needs to go to Old Mehico to talk to his new best friend down there…

From the LA Times-

WASHINGTON—A high-powered rifle lost in the ATF’s Fast and Furious controversy was used to kill a Mexican police chief in the state of Jalisco earlier this year, according to internal Department of Justice records, suggesting that weapons from the failed gun-tracking operation have now made it into the hands of violent drug cartels deep inside Mexico.

Luis Lucio Rosales Astorga, the police chief in the city of Hostotipaquillo, was shot to death Jan. 29 when gunmen intercepted his patrol car and opened fire. Also killed was one of his bodyguards. His wife and a second bodyguard were wounded.

The WASR used in Jalisco was purchased on Feb. 22, 2010, about three months into the Fast and Furious operation, by 26-year-old Jacob A. Montelongo of Phoenix. He later pleaded guilty to conspiracy, making false statements and smuggling goods from the United States and was sentenced to 41 months in prison.

Court records show Montelongo personally obtained at least 109 firearms during Fast and Furious. How the WASR ended up in the state of Jalisco, which is deep in central Mexico and includes the country’s second-largest metropolis, Guadalajara, remained unclear.

Not to say that I’m not a cynical SOB, but this is almost too convenient; to have F&F resurface now with all the other above the fold stories, almost makes me wonder if this is an attempt to knock the IRS and postponement of Obummercare off the front page…

  1. Mexico is still very unstable. Jalisco is a blood bath, though you don’t hear about it here. There is an open insurrection in Chiapas. For those of you who recall the Zapatista rebellion back in the 1980’s, Presidente Fox signed the treaty with the Zapatista rebels in my office circa 2001. (a bit of blogging trivia) Apparently the current regime in Mexico has ignited a new Zapatista movement in Chiapas, Gurrero, and Veracruz states. 44,000 marched in protest in Chiapas.

Yes, I know that they were shouting the same (tired) leftist crap, however, the problem is that the people in Southern Mexico are treated very badly by the government, which is why the Communists get a toe hold.

  2. (continued) Fast and Furious REALLY makes MexGov furious. I realize that Obama has been welcomed and they patiently listen to him read from his teleprompter, but US/Mexico relations are worse than I have ever seen them. It’s not just Fast and Furious. It’s a wide range of problems.

The Fast and Furious firearms were bought by the Sinaloa Federation in Guadalajara, so it’s not surprising that they were used in Jalisco State. USGOV knew **precisely** where most of them were stored up to about 4 months ago. The Obama Administration chose NOT to work with the Mexicans to recover them. The team that reported the details was quietly shelved by the Obama Administration. And yes, I know that for a fact.

  3. LL- Thanks for filling in the blanks, I appreciate it; also not really surprised by your last comment either…

    Ed- That it is…

  4. Obama is like a child in today’s world. I do not believe he has even the slightest ability to view and evaluate Mexico, N. Korea, China, Russia, the Mediterranean, the Mideast, North Africa . . . . the list is nearly endless. It will only continue to get worst IMHO. Hard to envision where his incompetence will lead us.

  5. Unicorn herders, the whole damn bunch. the consequences will land on our necks, not theirs.

People like LL, who know what they are talking about, get ignored (or marginalized).

  6. If the only thing they can do to get two of their fresh scandals off the front page is to get one of their older scandals back _on_ the front page, I call this progress. 🙂

  7. Rick- That it does…

Bill- Sadly I have to agree with you on all counts.

    WSF- All true!

    lelnet- Is it??? Sigh…

  8. One can never be too cynical when it comes to this administration.
When I’m president (Don’t lie! You all have a similar list.)
I will establish a 10 mile DMZ on the Mexican side of the border. Minefields, wire, fences …
