What are the Fibbies up to???

Interesting little piece of info…

FBIIt’s enough to make one wonder…

The FBI’s creeping advance into the world of counterterrorism is nothing new. But quietly and without notice, the agency has finally decided to make it official in one of its organizational fact sheets. Instead of declaring “law enforcement” as its “primary function,” as it has for years, the FBI fact sheet now lists “national security” as its chief mission.

So if the FBI is getting out of the law enforcement business, who’s going to step in??? Brownshirts???

  1. If they are as good at national security as they are at law enforcement, we are doomed. Anyone remember the flight schools who tried to alert the FBI when some of the 9/11 hijackers were students?

My LEO relatives privately refer to them as, “Fan Belt Inspectors”, and keep their distance.

  2. It about the money. Much more $$$$ spent in homeland security than crime prevention/law enforcement.

DHS funding in 2012 $60 Billion
DOJ funding in 2012 $28 Billion

The FBI can use Congressional funding for to pad their budget.

  3. What Gerry said: it’s all about the almighty dollar. But I like “Fan Belt Inspectors” – that’s cleaner than any substitutes I’ve heard. 🙂

  4. The FBI does not keep a file on every citizen of the United States.”

Maybe not, but they’ve now got one on you… 🙂

  5. What WSF said up there. Probably have to rely on other federal agencies and locals. Or maybe they will create a whole new organization…now wouldn’t that be fun?

  6. I always thought CI was in their portfolio.
But that doesn’t explain the change in verbiage as well as the previous comments.
    Budget concerns.

  7. WSF/Momma Fargo- There are good folks there… some anyway…

    Gerry/Rev- Point!

    Tim- What’s one more???

    Ed- Yep $$$

  8. I had a boss once who in an earlier life worked for J.Edger – he would never have put-up with the overt money-grubbing mission creep, he was ALL Law Enforcement and building his own STASI to keep the Congresstards in line. An smashing Communists.

  9. These are the same guys who basically ignored the Russkis tip on “Speedbump” and “boatboy”, aka the Boston Marathon Bombers. Top men, top men (and women)?

  10. Who’s going to step in? No one. The LAST thing this administration wants is someone enforcing the nations laws.

  11. NC- Good point! Things changed radically…

Jim- That and who knows how many others…

    Anon/Rick- Yep, GOOD point!

Joe- Ouch, but not wrong… sigh

  12. No offense to any former agents who may read here but I’ve worked with many and never trusted or admired a single one. I’ve worked in the field and in training with them and found them to be institutionally arrogant and pretty much useless unless it was a potential media case. When I went to the FBI SWAT Course the instructors spent the first two hours of class time explaining why Ruby Ridge and Waco weren’t their fault. I am so not exaggerating. This doesn’t surprise me in the least. I always got the strong impression that every FBI agent I ever worked with was simply marking time when it came to actual law enforcement work. I used to wonder what they were waiting for. I guess I know now.
