Another failure of leadership…

DHS is losing people right and left due to abysmal morale and a dysfunctional work environment (plus lousy pay)…

This has been a dirty little secret for years, but it’s finally getting out to the point that it ‘had’ to be addressed…

Full article HERE in the WAPO.

Of course they blame it on Bush… sigh…

But a good friend and former Naval Aviator who was there (until last month) has told me some horror stories about cronyism, paying the (insert type card here), revolving door political appointees and other major issues.

He actually turned down SES and has bolted to the civilian sector, and in the process doubled his pay.  And this isn’t ‘just’ happening in the cyber arena… Also happening in the CBP side of the house too.

Sigh… Don’t you feel safer now???

Pardon me while I go load a few more mags for backup…

  1. DHS has always had a reputation as a bunch of amateurs. But when you have a government agency that has no real purpose, no measurable productivity, and a magic wand to spend or act any way you like, you have a recipe for fraud, corruption and abuse.

  2. +1 Professor Hale

There was one person in a whole section that had any previous experience in the field they allegedly “experts” in. The knowledge base is only PowerPoint deep. Still waiting on a test plan after 4 years from when it was announced.

I do blame George II and Tom Ridge but it’s even worse now.

  3. You can also factor in the fact that THIS Emperor HATES to be told he he has “No Clothes On,” so why try to send Threat Intel up the Chain when one gets told “You’re Lying! THOSE People are our FRIENDS!”

      That’s how it works today.

Which is why I’m well rid of it too, and why I started my own company and operate without government funding.

  4. While leaving us, the citizens, vulnerable to all kinds of nastiness, it does provide employment for the unqualified and unmotivated.

  5. SPE- You get good and bad… sigh

Prof/Gerry- Exactly… And the ones that DO know how to do things, aren’t allowed for PC reasons, so they leave…

Les- That’s IF it ever gets past the political appointees…

    LL- Smart move!

    WSF- Sadly you’re right…

  6. The Federal Protective Service, my old unit, was moved from GSA to DHS. One FPO said “I wish I had stayed with the DC police.”
A buddy got transferred to from Treasury to DHS (can you say ’empire building’? I knew you could.) Took 4 months before he knew to whom to send his reports.

  7. Charlie- They’ve originally started trying to do that 6 years ago now… Former shipmate of mine is one of the airport managers. TSA and .gov are fighting them all the way… sigh

    drjim- Yeah…

  8. Yep. A person here lost his job, sadly, he was a good one. Back at the Homeland…they could stand to lose of few in that state. +1 WSF

  9. The best thing I ever did was to turn down a position at DHS. It would’ve been more money at the time, but not worth the headaches. It was winning by losing.
