Well, the word came down today that ALL military sent to west Africa WILL be automatically quarantined ‘somewhere’ for 21 days prior to re-entry into the USA…
But if you’re a civilian, you can fly directly home, bitch to the media, and immediately be released to ‘home monitoring’…
Oh yeah, and they STILL are not saying how long the ‘deployment’ of the troops will be.
Also heard the National Guard/Reserves will be part of the mix, and the aircrews that fly in/out will also be quarantined… Probably along with the airplane (which the crew will have to clean).
It just gets better and better…

Should Ebola “break-out” in the US, it probably be necessary to declare martial law. The disease would flash through some sectors of society and smolder in others. This is not necessarily a socio-economic strata thing either. Kids aged 12-19 know everything and get bored quickly.
If martial law is declared due to an epidemic, a core of adults with both training and on-the-ground experience may be all that holds this country together.
It is very hard to justify two levels of contamination control but I’m sure the press core will be glad to help rationalize it.

Quarantine for the military will be simple. They have places to quarter them and the ability to control them. They can just make the quarantine a part of the deployment. Pay will simply continue. Even the bitching and grumbling is already taken care of. 😉
Denying quarantine for some while expediting visas and detaining others makes no kind of rational sense, unless your plan is to further destabilize the situation.

So, I have a question.
Say 30 people arrive on a plane from West Africa.
There is a chance that one or more of them have been exposed to the Ebola virus, and thus one or more of them will contract the disease.
How do you quarantine them?
If you lock them all together, say in barracks, then if one is infected then he will surely infect all the others. You have just succeeded in turning ONE infection into 30.
I can guarantee that there is no provision for individual quarantine.
And the thirty who think they are not infected will claw through sheet metal to get away from the one that definitely is.
And we see how well “home monitoring” works out – you get to ride on the subway and go bowling.

I really am not worried about a break out here at the level we are seeing in Africa. But watching just one more amazing cock-up leaves me wondering once again if I’m watching the Keystone Kops or a surreal horror movie.
