Actually… NO!!!

DSC01370It really doesn’t…  Unless you like your chicken greasy and gamy…

But I did make a side comment that had a Yankee snorting coffee!

“Down here Armadillo is also called Possum on the half shell.”  His wife looked at he and I like we’d gone nuts… LOL

Now this, on the other hand…

THIS is real food!  And this was the smaller size chicken fried steak. The large takes up the whole plate!!!  And pecan pie for dessert!!!

Just roll me out with the wheelbarrow…

Actually… NO!!! — 26 Comments

  1. One of the best chicken fried steakes I ever found was at the truck stop in Huntsville Tx. Good stuff. You could order the sandwich for half the price of the dinner and the only difference was the slice of bread under the steak. I always ordered it with fries and extra gravy.

  2. During the Great Depression poor people in Texas used to eat Armadillos, calling them “Hoover Hogs.” Armadillos also are subject to leprosy, and it is possible to catch leprosy from extended contact with armadillos.

  3. Someplace I saw they are cooked then served in their shell.

I’d be willing to try it. Prolly would like the chicken friend steak better.

  4. Possum on the half shell….ROFL…never heard that before but love it.

  5. How did you get the fried okra into that long, tubular shape?

    • But possum is somewhat popular around here, a delicacy I’ve avoided.
There was a time I could get five dollars for a fresh road kill.

  6. Well, I’ve eaten Possum. It’s fat meat with streaks of lean!! My grandmother loved Possum, so when I caught one in a Rabbit trap I’d take it next door to her. She would place it (live) in her possum box & feed it greens (lettuce etc.) for a few days to CLEAN IT OUT!! If you haven’t tried IT, don’t bother.

  7. Wash that down with a cold Shiner and you’ll be about as close to Heaven as you can get on earth…

  8. Armadillo’s have moved in to central Missouri. They tear the hell out of fairways and greens. I cannot convince the base AP’s to get out the night vision equipment and take care of the problem. That is not as big a mess as having two Buck deer get into a Shoving contest on the 12th green.

  9. In the Downriver Detroit area (towards Toledo) it’s marshy, and local fraternal organizations host muskrat dinners. The feds tried to shut them down and they went underground, but they’re back in the open again. They sell posum sometimes.

  10. In my travels as an oil field trucker and field supervisor, I have found two places that have the best chicken fried steaks. The first was in Forsyth, Montana (about 100 miles east of Billings) in a small diner with only 9 stools and no tables. Their chicken fried steak was half a round steak and served up with hash browns and lots of gravy and better than excellent. The second was in northwest Houston, Texas near the National Supply rig-up yard. There, you had a choice, either half a round steak or a whole one. The place had picnic-style tables and had little to no “atmosphere”, but the food was fantastic. And the beer was always really, really cold. I haven’t bee back to either of them in a lot of years, so don’t know if they are still open today or not.

  11. Somewhere I’ve got a very old Southern cook book that explains how Granny cleaned and cooked the various critters that showed up in her kitchen. IIRC possum required a couple of days of cleaning and soaking in milk or some such.

  12. Buck- Yep!

RobertF- I’ll keep that in mind!

RobertE- Yep, my folks talked about it, and yes I have tried it… Yech…

    PH- You would, trust me!!!

LL- Heh, Texas… They do it differently…

    Homebru-LOL

    WSF- Yep!

Ed- Heard that, and there IS a road kill cafe… 🙂

Woody- Yep, seen that done in Louisiana too…

    Tim- Pretty much! 😉

Ed J- Was there backstrap for breakfast??? 🙂

Ed B- Yeah, heard about them, never tried them (that I know of)

ScottieBill- Was the one north of Houston in an industrial area? Did the name start with an H???

drjim- They can do that! 🙂

    Brigid- Sorry! 😀

emdfl- Yep, much like doing any other wild game.

Dammit- It was good! And I was FULL!

  13. There’s a sayin’ here in Texas…
    “There’s a place for all God’s creatures.
Right next to the mashed taters and gravy.”

  14. Stretch- Sorry! 😛

    Flugelman- Yep, works for me!!!

Fiftycal- Actually Branagas restaurant in Texarkana. But I’m pretty sure you could duplicate it at the Elite!

  15. Hey OldNFO,

We call them “Possum on the half shell” here in GA and I think we have more of them in GA than there are in Texas, I see scads of them DRT on the roads and they are tearing up the yards and getting either capped or run over by the locals.

  16. No backstrap the base course is on state park land. No hunting, they used to have a special black powder hunt.
