Antique Armoire…

The B&B I stayed at on the last trip is in an old commercial building built in the 1800s, so there aren’t any closets…

But my room did have an old armoire in it…

Armoire 4

I ‘think’ this one was a business man’s armoire, due to the layout…

Armoire 3

It’s set up a little differently than the ones we have down at the old home place, and has labels for each space (hence the man’s armoire)Armoire 1

I can’t even guess when it was made, but obviously after the turn of th 19th century, due to the painted metal labels and coin tray in the door.

Armoire 2Thankfully I didn’t need either of those blankets, but it’s kinda funny that they stored them there (just like hotels throw them in the closets).

For it’s age, it’s in pretty good shape, and it did the job!

    • You mean where to find things.
Things get put on the floor, the chair, the bed, and magically end up where we can find them.

  1. I love B&Bs for stuff like that and the company of the owners who usually know about every piece they put in a room.

  2. I really like it. It would work in any bedroom and you can’t have too much storage space.

  3. Mrs.C- LOL

Ed- Heh, ‘I’ don’t have one of those ‘magic’ picker-uppers… And yes, there ARE interesting pieces in B&Bs usually with a story!

    LL- That’s true!

Rev- Yep, it’s a nice one!

  4. In Germany, where I was stationed for 6 years, closets are not built into a room like here in the US.

Every German bedroom has these armoires, as they use these things as closets, and call them shranks.

  5. Fredd- Thanks I didn’t know that!

Ed- Didn’t know that either… I thought y’all used standard lockers.

  6. My great grandad was in the business of making and selling “gentlemens” armoirs in the city of Le Havre, then Paris in the late 1800’s early 1900’s. That looks very much like the ones he advertised for the period. Keep in mind you were pretty well to do if you had more than 1 suit and 2 pair of underwear and socks back then, plus at least 1 hat, maybe 2, so pretty much all you owned fit in there or in a large “dresser” trunk.

  7. Edward- Your point is dead on. My grandfather told of having one Sunday go to meeting, and two pairs of work clothes and maybe two pairs of socks until he got married… And one pair of boots.

  8. Hey old NFO;

There is something about an old well built piece of furniture. I like the quality touches it shows and the class from a bygone era. Maybe I am old fashioned…..But let me check with “google”
