It’s summer time, and coming up on the 4th… Fireworks and…

back in the day hand cranked ice cream

For whatever reason (maybe it’s the damn near 100 degrees), I’ve been thinking about home-made, hand cranked ice cream…

We used to do this at all the family reunions, and any ‘other’ time, like 4th of July, we could get away with it! My personal favorite was home-made peach ice cream, with fresh freestone peaches right off the trees!

What was yours?

  1. Banana. We also had freezer “ice box” ice cream made in the metal freezer trays. I love ice cream, but now I stick to the lower fat version of Black Cherry Vanilla. A refreshing treat is reduced fat vanilla bean ice cream with diet root beer. You have to try out root beer brands. I found Stewart’s diet to be tasty. Now there is a brand of root beer that is low alcohol. Could prove interesting…an adult root beer float!

  2. There’s not much better than homemade peach ice cream (with the peaches fresh from the tree) unless it’s cherry vanilla. That would be perfect for the Fourth of July!

  3. Family gathering, cream from our own cows, strawberrys from our garden, and me cranking on the ice cream freezer. Went back to put the equipment away and came back to no, as in none, ice cream left. Last time I made it for that ungrateful bunch. That was over fifty years ago and I am still pissed.

  4. Rick- Sorry… 🙂

DLG- OH wow, I hadn’t thought about fig ice cream in years… Drool…

Kathie- I can honestly say I’ve never had banana ice cream. Adult root beer? I could do that! 😀

    LL- True!

WSF- Oh, THAT sucked, and still does… 🙂

    • The root beer is labeled Best Damned Root Beer in the store. I has alcohol in it, about 5%. Not much, but would make an interesting root beer float 🙂

  5. We never made it! Here in AZ?!
My maternal grandfather (Gramp) was, however, the family baker and made many a Lemon Meringue Pie, though!
He taught me how to bake, too!
Crap. Now I want homemade ice cream AND lemon meringue pie!
    See what you did!! 🙂

  6. My granny made homemade ice cream. Fresh peach was the favorite. My cousins and I took turns turning the crank, and then my kids took over the crank turning. It was always such a delicious treat, and all gone way too soon. Great memories.

  7. we made strawberry (from Big Red) most excellent but Mom’s plain Ole vanilla was always the best.

  8. Peach. Gammy’s recipe. Electric freezer (with a cordon of adults around it to keep eager kids at bay).

  9. Plain old vanilla was my favorite but fresh peach was a close second. We had a family tradition of homemade ice cream for all birthdays regardless of the time of year and always on the 4th. Mom made a mix that was not cooked and used eggs, sugar, milk, whipping cream, and vanilla but I don’t remember the proportions for a 5 quart freezer. Nothing like it!

  10. Fresh peach and fresh strawberry are both yummy, but the best is Mom’s lemon ice cream!! Now I’m gonna have to find that recipe and get some going…it’s a freezer recipe, no crank needed.

  11. Pour in Bailey’s Irish Cream into vanilla while churning.
    That’ll make your day.

  12. Vanilla, scooped into half of a fresh cantaloupe. Heaven.

Last summer, the old general store had a sale. Everything was sold for the price on the tag, on the day it had closed. In 1983…. We got a White Mountain ice cream maker for $90….

    😀

  13. Rev- Yep! 🙂

gfa- Really??? Damn… And pie is good too! 🙂

    Dammit- Yes it was/is!

Randy- Those were the second and third batches…LOL

TXRed- What, that’s cheating!!! Manual cranking was the ‘way’ to go…LOL

    Mrs.C- You don’t know what you’ve missed… sigh

Stretch- Yeah, but it’s damn near impossible to get the ice cream to actually freeze then!

Heath- My grandmother loved to do that! And you STOLE that ice cream maker!!!

  14. My favorite was cherry chocolate chip. I always had to sit on top of the churn to keep it from walking off. My butt still gets cold just thinking about it!

  15. July 4th was always homemade ice cream. Mom mixed it, Dad loaded it up, I helped with the ice and salt, then I put a towel over it, and threw my leg across it, and cranked it in the garage till it was ready. Did that from about 6 years old till I was in high school. I always got the ribs. We got an electric at the new place.

Crap, it’s kinda misty in here…..

  16. FM- LOL, figures you went with fancy… 😀

    Ed- That works too!

    STx- Yeah, that happens…
