December 7, 1941…

On Dec 7, 1941, Japan performed a sneak attack on the US at Pearl Harbor, the attack sank four U.S. Navy battleships (two of which were raised and returned to service later in the war) and damaged four more; other damages included three destroyers, three cruisers, 188 aircraft with 2,402 killed and 1,282 wounded.

This day does live in infamy…

  1. Knowing there are so very few actual WWII vets left, I made it a point to call the VFW and The American Legion to offer my thanks to their members who served in WWII.

The people I spoke to were touched and grateful.

They were, truly, THE Greatest Generation our Nation has ever seen.

  2. My daddy talks of listening to this news on the radio. It was one of the last things he did with his mama, who died of cancer in January of ’42. He says he remembers her crying about Pearl Harbor and that she held him and rocked him for a long time after hearing the news.

  3. Could you tell me if b. hussein gave any recognition to the brave men who served and died? I live in the middle-east and news in english is slow to arrive. All we hear is his gushing over the muslim holidays and saying how great islam is. Did he say anything at all about the brave Americans who fought and died so he could be where he is??

  4. The news stations garnered a whole 15 second spot to report on this last night. Very Generous of them. And I havent seen a thing about (if anything) Idiot In Charge did. Prolly nothing.

The older I get the more I believe It Was the Greatest Generation Ever.

  5. Along the Colorado Front Range many flags were at half mast.

A friend was a five year old Navy dependent there that day. He remembers an airplane flyig low over their quarters and someone in the plane waving at him.

  6. Donald- Agreed!

Snigs- It is sad that the radio was one of the last memories… One wishes they would have been positive, not negative.

    Anon- no I do not.

    Peedee- Agreed

    WSF- He’s lucky they didn’t bomb housing…

  7. I remember my father saying he and mom heard about Pearl Harbor on the radio after coming home from church. Dad didn’t know where it was. Mom, a teacher, did.

If that happened today, I doubt we’d get the same reaction from most of our nation’s citizens.

  8. It was positive in a sense, NFO. If it hadn’t been such memorable news, the last time of being rocked by his mama might not have been remembered. All memories, be they good or bad, serve a huge purpose in our lives I guess.

  9. Crucis- My mom and dad both knew where it was, and two of our relatives were there, on USS Arizona…

    Snigs- Point taken!
