Practice, practice, practice…

Went out to the range to shoot the National Match M-1 this weekend at the range, and lack of practice reared it’s ugly head yet again… I didn’t shoot worth a dang only 1 x and only 2 10 rings. Sigh… And the @#&* extractor decided to start acting up, so after 10 rounds I gave up on the day and wandered over to the pistol range. Low and behold, there was a bowling pin shoot in progress.

Well, stupid me, they said I could jump in, so I paid my money and got on the line…

Yep, didn’t do worth a dang there either… I could NOT break 12 seconds any one of the three rounds. I could get 4 of the 5, but that fifth one just ate me up. Now granted I was shooting my carry pistol, but still, that was embarrassing; especially when some of the folks were down in the 6 second range (granted they were shooting race guns, but still…). In the ‘production’ group, a lady from one of the local gun clubs won with a time of 8 seconds and change! She said she shoots EVERY weekend, and dry fires at least 50 times a night. OBTW, she beat her hubby by almost a full second 🙂

Needless to say, HE was not happy, but everybody else got a laugh out of it…

So, after two embarrassments in a row, I tucked my tail and went to yet another range, and practiced for an hour, at least I ‘finally’ got more or less back on target.

Bottom line, a month off from shooting DEFINITELY impacted my ability, and I sure as hell was NOT smooth in anything I was doing.

  1. It has been awhile since i was able to crank off a few rounds.I would most likely miss the side of a barn with my twelve gauge.Sigh

  2. Oh, and Linda .. shooting is fun and challenging … would really recommend you give it a go.

  3. Yes, Linda, we all hope you never have to do it. But we think if you do it safely in practice, you will not hurt the rest of us. Most of us really hope anyone has to do it, especially if we spent too much time looking into the distance for dangerous men with terrible intentions.

I do know that pianists don’t do really well without practice, swimmers, high jumpers, marathoners, and you get the idea. Might be why politicians do so badly, no dry fry, no target time, and certainly no practice.

  4. Thanks, guys, but at this stage of my life,(I’m not the cute little girl in the photo, anymore), I think I’ll pass on the guns.

  5. Linda- I truly hope you don’t ever have to…

    Keads- Yeah, sigh…

Fuzzy- I can hit the barn, IF I’m standing inside…

    Julie- I’m trying!

    Earl- Good point!

  6. Now days, on my very best day, I’m marginal.

In Army basic, had the high score in the battalion. Didn’t have a chance to fire again until six weeks later. Couldn’t hit anything. True accuracy is a very perishable skill.

  7. Like the old joke about “How do I get to Carnegie Hall”, the key is PRACTICE!
When ammo prices were through the roof last year (when you could even find it!) I bought the 22LR conversion kit for my Kimber 1911. It doesn’t recoil the same, so follow-up shots are different, but for that first shot, it’s just like shooting it with the regular 45ACP slide on it.
And by having the 22LR conversion on it, my wife was able to shoot it very accurately, and now enjoys shooting 45ACP rounds with it.
    wv: “gunmeth”
Is that like “airplane whiskey”, one drop and you’re dead?

  8. RT- I’m sure you could, we just need to get you to the range 😉

    WSF- Yes it is, sigh…

drjim- No question! Glad you’ve got the wife interested, that is one more thing to do together!

  9. I shoot once a week. If I miss a week I have to start from square one.
    @ Linda
My wife is 72 and her first range time was a month ago. Now she has a .45 on her nightstand.
She has issues if the wind is blowing [hair?] but shooting is fun to her.

  10. Went to the range today w/ the boy. Shot the .308 and man does it kick. Anyway got into a grove and just had a blast. The boy is into bow and arrow. Justy got him a new bow. I’m not ready for one yet. Yet…
