It’s official, Knives are SHARP…

And in other news I’m stupid…

NON-PC pic follows...

Teh stupid it burns (and hurts too)…

THIS is what happens when you do stupid things with sharp knives, like pry something.  I was helping a friend’s wife fix a new blind in the kitchen, and was trying to pop a plug holding the cord in the bottom of the blind out.  I could NOT get a screwdriver under the last @#*(*) plug, after a number of attempts, I pulled out my Benchmade and was trying to pry the plug up enough to get a screw driver under it.  Needless to say, it decided to pop out, she let go of the other end of the blind, and it twisted my off hand up as I was trying to not cut any cords on the blind…

Instead, I cut the hell outta my thumb… 10 stiches, 5 internal, 5 external, antibiotics, and no pain meds. At least I missed the tendon, but not by much (they are real shiny when not covered with blood)…

The female doc called me an idiot (true), said I didn’t deserve pain meds, and needed to hurt to ‘remember’ not to do stupid things…

So I’m chewing ibuprofen like candy and cussing my stupidity…

Accidents DO happen, especially when we do stupid things- The old right tool for the job would have prevented this.

Don’t be stupid…

That is the PSA for today…

It’s official, Knives are SHARP… — 58 Comments

  1. Ouch! I feel your pain. I’ve been cut by both our new ceramic kitchen knife and the KBar I bought in Pittsburg.

Hope you feel better. But remember, chicks dig scars!

  2. I can sympathize. My left hand always seems to catch it and don’t ask about scaring the bejeebus out of the (former) wife while she’s chopping onions in the kitchen.
    It’ll heal and you’ll remember…..for a while anyway.

  3. Ouch! is right. That doc is a sadist.

Speaking of using the proper tool for the job, my Dad (cheapest man I’ve ever known) used to use single edged razor blades held between thumb and index finger to castrate pigs. That is until he was trying that on a pig that had grown significantly since giving him the slip when he should have been fixed.

The pig kicked and knocked the blade out of Dad’s hand. You guessed it. Dad tried catching it resulting in many stitches and a severed nerve in his thumb.

He switched to disposable scalpels with a good grippy handle after that.

  4. If you spend enough time around knives, it’s bound to happen. I gashed myself real good once. I still remember the very last thought in my head before the knife slipped was: “boy, this is real stupid”. Then, my thought was justified. Thankfully, I’ve not had one that required stitches. That looks like a nasty knife bite.

  5. It’s hurting me just looking at it.
I remember sticking an ice pick through my knee when I was younger (Don’t ask how that happened 🙂
    Hope you heal quickly!

  6. DB- They may, but “I” don’t… sigh

    YOF- Heard that!

HT- That is worse than what I did, but he was smarter in the long run! 🙂

    Murph/Keads- No kidding!!!

45- Yep, but I was lucky it ‘bounced’ off the knuckle.

    SS- That HAD to hurt…

  7. Hope you heal smoothly, fully, and quickly!

I’ll not point any fingers, because chances are high that any finger pointed would be scarred. Take care, and take painkillers – pain may remind us not to do stupid things, but it also slows healing.

  8. Ouch. I try not to use my knife for prying, but that’s because of all the tips I’ve broken. I’ve sliced myself up plenty of times just from not paying attention, though I’ve yet to need stitches.

So which Benchmade do you have?

  9. OH Boy… not good! Im glad everything went back together with stitches 😉 Good luck and keep up the anibiotics.

  10. Been there, Done that… and yes, it left a mark. The mark reminds me not to do stupid things. Sometimes I pay attention.

    Ouch.

  11. Ouch. And probably more ouch tomorrow when your body really figures out what you did.

I’ve done a couple good ones when prepping for cooking – ended up trying to decide whether I needed to go to the emergency room or if I could wrap it good enough to finish chopping. The most recent slip left me looking at the tip of a finger laying on the cutting board and thinking “That can’t be good.”

  12. Wing- MEE too.

Robert- an old 154CM… and it IS sharp!

BP- Stupid, but other than that, okay…

    Pissed- I am, trust me!

    Carteach0- Ouch is right!

PH- Ouch… at least I wasn’t looking at pieces laying on the table!

  13. I can remember that I bought my first Spyderco in 2001.

It was a Spyderco Clipit Endura with a clear serrated edge on one side.

At that time, I figured it wouldn’t be so terribly sharp.

    Of course, I was wrong.

I took it out of the box (I was staying in the Railroad Park in Dunsmuir, CA at the time), unfolded it, and drew it with only gravity across the top of my right knee.

Naturally, the bastard completely opened up my right knee and blood cascaded down my right leg.

    By gravity only.

Spydercos are EXTREMELY sharp right out of the box.

Which is why I carry one wherever I go, in my pants, in my shorts, the longest one they make which is — that I can find — the POLICE.

I only have to unfold it and rake it peripherally across an arm, a leg, a face, an eyeball.

This Old Fart is actually ARMED and armed in a way that Thugs most likely won’t anticipate.

Until I fillet you like a bad steak.

    BZ

  14. You knew better. Glad you are alright. Sounds like something I would do. In fact, first day I had my shiny rainbow Kershaw leak, I cut myself with it. No stitches for that one though.

  15. Oddly enough, I cut my own thumb open on Friday, although I didn’t take a photo. I probably could have used a couple of stitches – – I was bleeding pretty badly – – but made do with redneck first aid (a strip cut from a washcloth and a piece of duct tape). It’s much better now.

  16. You might lose your knife carry certification on your man card!!

Pain don’t hurt! (At least say that)

Heal fast, embellish the story later.

  17. OUCH Keep up with the OTC pain meds. I agree with Wing that pain slows healing.
I’ll bet the doc takes pain meds when she does something stupid.

  18. The doctor at Urgent Care was much nicer when I pulled the dumb ass move working outside with a Cold Steel knife.

I was smart enough not to drip blood on the kitchen floor when I got the car keys so the wife did not start lecturing about my lack of skill with things with sharp edges till I got home hours later.

I found Single Barrel Jack works wonders on the pain. Heal up.

    Gerry

  19. I’m with Dannytheman and DaddyBear…make up a super-interesting and dangerous-sounding story, it’ll work as a great pick-up line.
In the meantime, heal up quickly!

  20. Dannytheman–I don’t think you get your knife-carry on your man-card without a few scars….

NFO–hope you heal quickly. Bright side is it’s not on a knuckle or bendy-part and you are really lucky that no nerves were affected.

Thanks for the pic–I need to put it in my knife collection so I don’t get complacent.

  21. Parrothead- Thanks!

Guffaw- Yeah… I just tend to make the PAINFUL ones…

    Fuzzy- Thanks

BZ- Yeah but… we’re supposed to fillet the OTHER guys, not ourselves… dammit

Jenn- Yep knives are sharp… 🙂

Bob- Glad to hear yours was not as bad as mine. I posted it so maybe someone will actually THINK before doing a similar stupid thing!

drjim- I wasn’t… but can’t put that language here! 🙂

Danny- Nah, the folks that know me would know it was stupidity… 🙂

    Laura/FM- trying 🙂

Gerry- My problem was I couldn’t hold it closed AND drive… And the antibiotics means no booze dammit…

Christina- Like that would work for me…LOL

Midwest Chick- Actually it IS directly across the side of the bendy bits… which is even worse!
When I screw up, I do it good!

    ADM- Meee tooo…

GB- Yeah, too late smart for sure!

  22. When I was in grade school I did a 180 slice around the top of my middle knuckle of my pointing figer. I could lift it up and see all sorts of stuff underneath.

Mom wrapped a BIG bandaid around it and got me a tetnus shot. I still have the scar although it faded quite a bit now.

See, instead of a tatoo, you’ve just collected a scar.

Come to think of it, it’s my left hand too like Old Furt’s.

  23. Pissed- Stupidity ‘pays’… sigh…

Crucis- I can vouch for seeing pieces/parts, including the knuckle bones and tendon on this one… NOT pretty, and I was bleeding like a stuck pig!

Andy- I’m hoping! Follow up today was positive!

    Murph- Shaddap… 🙂

  24. Someday we will need to compare scars. Like mine from cutting the end off a finger with a hedge trimmer. Hint. Don’t hold a branch in one hand and use the hedge trimmer to saw back and forth.

  25. WSF- The idjit in front of me at the ER had done just that, except he’d mangled three fingers…

  26. “Knives are sharp” – well there’s a fun Snapple fact!

I hope the pain subsides and you heal quickly. Ouch.

  27. Well at least it wasn’t the trigger puller! Or are you left handed? ‘spect it will get better soon!

  28. ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouchouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch

  29. Ouch. OUCH! OUCH! OUCH!

Sorry to hear, NFO. You’ll at least have an interesting story to tell Saturday night, right? 🙂

    Heal quick.

  30. Mrs. C- Yep… sigh

Ev- Nope not the booger hook for the bans switch, but I’ll be shooting one handed for a while.

    Jim/Jay- Yep 🙁

  31. Thankfully no tendon repair micro surgery. Heal up!

Let’s not discuss my right hand thumb, a brand new Buck knife, and how I know about tendon repair surgery.

Just remember … “scars are manly coolness”

  32. Yeowww! Good Heavens, that looks horrible, NFO! I hope you heal up quickly.

  33. You’re doc needs to get her head out of whatever orifice it’s in and give you some decent meds. You don’t get bonus points for suffering. You;ll do enough of that without her help.

  34. Oh … my.

Let me just say that I’m 15 hours into a 2 1/2 day clear liquid diet and I’m not hungry any more.

Thanks for that, at least, and here’s hoping you heal quickly.

  35. Been there done that.

My last thoughts just before the blood began to flow were “I really shouldn’t be doing this”

Bisected the pad away from my thumb bone. They almost sewed it back on straight too!

Glad you’re OK, It’ll be an ugly road, but then we’ll all be laughing about it.

  36. Art- Yep, counting my blessings on that one!

Tarb/Nancy- So far so good (knock on wood)…

Freeholder- Actually you’re right, but the Aleve is working pretty well…

    Skull- Trying 🙂

Weer’d- Lemme guess, on the boat, right???

  37. You did something dumb, the doctor did something stupid. There is no way that she should have denied you pain medication to “teach you a lesson”. That’s malpractice on it’s face.

No doubt that injury is painful and will be every time you move it for a while. I hope it heals well and you can get back to the important thing (shooting) soon.

    Take care.

  38. Oh my god, what a pity party! And I noticed you blamed the woman for your injury or is this whole thing a fake?

If you need attention that badly you need to seek professional help and they need to take all your guns and knives away.

  39. TOTW- Probably, but she did good on the sewing job, and I am not a big proponent of high grade painkillers. Aleve is working fine.

Anon- You need to learn to read- I didn’t blame ANYBODY but myself. If you think this is fake, show up and the NE Blog Shoot and you can count the stitches yourself…

  40. Worse, NFO, in the parking lot of my lovely climate-controlled lab. You know the one that has lots of phones. The kind of phones I could have used to call toll-free and free-of-charge to have AAA jimmy the locks of my co-worker’s car.

But nope I had to be Mr. Resourceful and attempt to help him break into his car with a tire iron (that Ford covers with rubber that I was shaving off to get a better edge) and a coat hanger.

I later called AAA with my thumb stitched up and bandaged….

I’m an idiot, and I have the scars to prove it!

  41. Weer’d- At least ‘I’ carried a slim jim 🙂 Those damn Ford lug wrenches were useless…

  42. Had to break into a lady’s minivan when I was an MP at Lemoore, CA.

It was the height of summer and as soon as I slipped the slim-jim in between the glass and the gasket, every window on her van shattered. The heat had built the pressure inside the van to critical levels.

I really hated having to write the report on that.

I also got stabbed through the hand once too, multiple stitches inside and out, thankfully it went between the fingers and missed the vital bits for hand movement.

  43. Instinct- Not the first time THAT has happened… And I’m glad you didn’t do ‘serious’ damage to your hand!

  44. Hi…

A knife is a cutting tool with an exposed cutting edge or blade, hand-held or otherwise, with or without a handle. This site contains very informative matter. I would like to come here again. This type of posting should go on.
