Guy with the gun robbed of his gun…

Open carry proponent robbed of his gun at gun point…
Just because you’re carrying, you can’t sit in Condition White and think you’re safe… sigh…

And some of the ‘comments’ are rather interesting too…

  1. Sigh…. One thing I try to hammer in to students is that the gun on your hip is not a talisman that wards off evil.

You have to be able to use it and more importantly be aware of what is going on around you AT ALL TIMES when you have a handgun!

Oh. I do tell every one that passes the class: “Don’t make the rest of us legal owners look stupid because YOU did something stupid.

Had a small situation tonight after work in the parking lot of the grocery store. The best way of winning these games is not to play.

  2. That is hubby’s biggest fear over my wanting to open carry. Either it makes me a target by criminals or LEO and someone does me serious harm.

  3. 45- Yep… sigh

PH – And the answer was???

Keads- Good point! Nothing wrong with walking away…

    Lila- I don’t- period. I want it to be a ‘surprise’ 😀

  4. NFO- If I can RUN away I will. And I agree. I do not OC because I do not want to lose the advantage!

  5. Did you get the feeling that one girl they interviewed was wanting to laugh cause his gun got taken away?

Can’t help but wonder if he really knew how to use it…Just Saying 🙂

  6. One good sign is this is an old story, and appears to be the exception that proves the rule.

Only takes a few gut-shot muggers to get the “Do not Touch” message across…

  7. A gun on the hip does not a warrior make. Like the others have said, situational awareness and a will to fight…those are the things that distinguish a sheepdog from a mere sheep with a cool piece of gun bling.

  8. You’ll remember that, back in the day when everyone open carried (Old West) that it became necessary to learn Fast Draw to prevent someone from “getting the drop” on you. If Open Carry becomes common again, Fast Draw will also need to become common again.

  9. Answer was – open carry leaves you vulnerable to having the gun taken away. And to stupid questions. Surprises are better.

Also attitude and awareness was emphasized over an over. And that carrying is not a license to play cowboy – “walk away” is a good answer.

  10. Weer’d- I missed that part- Glad it is not new.

    drjim- Yep

    Murph- Agreed!

    Bob- Good point!!!

PH- Good to hear, thanks for answering back!

  11. Statistically, the chances of being robbed of your gun while open carrying are in the noise. If it was a real problem, the police wouldn’t do it. But they do, even though there are plenty of cases of police officers being robbed of their service weapons. It just happens rarely.

  12. Situational Awareness is far more important than where you carry you gun!! I never routinely open carry, my freedom, my choice. Only if I happen to take off my jacket in a store, or food place does my weapon show. Even then I prefer to keep my weapon towards the wall. I have carried for 35 years, 99.7% concealed. I do agree that this was a freak incident. Why would a bad guy take that chance? Seems a little stinky to me.

  13. Andy- Good point. Retention holsters ARE pretty much a fact of life for LEOs in a duty environment though.

Danny- Agreed, ‘something’ is not right.

  14. Shaking my head. . .

Point 1. There have been two times in my life when I carried a weapon only. Once was in the military, and nobody every tried to walk up to me and rob me. Had they, I damn sure wouldn’t have helped them get the gun out of my hands or holster.

The second instance was when I had a big shiny badge sitting right next to it with an eagle on it. Nobody ever came up and tried to rob me.

Point 2. All dogs have teeth. Only a few are willing to use them. The predators are pretty good (Darwin) at sniffing out those dogs whose teeth are only for eating and show–and nothing else.

We have a lot of gun owners out there, even (or dare I say, especially) with CHLs whose teeth are only for eating and smiling.

Until one changes his or her attitude about how/what to do, one’s teeth are of only basic nutritional value to them.

Four decades of martial arts have taught me the same thing. I’ve seen genuine black belts beat to within an inch of their lives because their mindset was not one of defense and/or appropriate reaction.

And as far as the ABC sham story behind that one (shooter walks into a college classroom), there are SO many things wrong with that it’s not even funny.

More examples of why I grow more reclusive every day and want little to nothing to do with most of society.

  15. Part of me likes the open carry, but part of me has the ” why advertise”. Open carry unless somebody is in condition yellow all the time is a risky proposition.
