Bait… It’s what’s for Dinner (Again)

Got drug over to Hayama on Sagami Bay for more sushi tonight.  This little place was truly a hole in the wall, 8 seats all at the bar, no tables, and pretty close to the waterfront.  Two older guys running the place, and I ‘think’ a grandson was the ‘runner’…

No menu (or at least I never saw one), and absolutely NO Engrish was spoken… In other words, I was at the mercy of the folks I was with…

It was all good, until they did a round of eel, and I just couldn’t handle that one 🙁

Totally different quality from the Sushi Go Round, and it was damn expensive by comparison!!! $750 (roughly) for six people, but I do have to admit I was stuffed!!!

And the kid got sent somewhere for desert, and came back with an interesting little ‘dish’ that was a lemon custard, topped with fresh strawberries, and some kind of chocolate sauce drizzled over that!!! That was truly a great desert, but no way in hell to get the recipe or even confirm what I was eating…LOL

Off to bed, back to the airport am tomorrow, and 12-13 hours later land back home an hour before I take off…

Sorry for the lack of posts, and lack of comments, I’ll be commenting more when I get back this weekend.

Bait… It’s what’s for Dinner (Again) — 16 Comments

  1. I miss sushi. I won’t eat it unless I can smell the ocean, so Kentucky is out of bounds for eating raw fish.

    Have a safe trip home!

  2. Have to admit I’m jealous at the sushi consumption. I’m okay with eel (not a fav) but can’t do sea urchin or octopus.

    Safe travels back!

  3. Over $100/head does seem pricey. Sushi has never appealed to me. But it sounds like you had a great time.

  4. Bait, huh? I’ve had sushi. All-in-all, I’d almost prefer the blue-gill that I caught and chopped for catfish bait. At least I knew where it came from and what it was.

  5. Laura- Chris can have it…

    DB- Good point!

MC- The octopus was okay, and didn’t get any sea urchin (that I know of…) Another day another airplane ride…

    Julie/Keads/WSF- Trying 🙂

Andy- It was a good time, and yes it WAS expensive, but you do pay for good stuff here… I wouldn’t do it again at that price though.

Crucis- You do have a point 🙂

  6. When I was newbe to Nippon my first bar trip [off the beaten path] they had seaweed and unsalted peas on the bar.
As a starter to drinking they proffered little pieces of octopus.
Like Double Bubble, the shit never got smaller in your mouth, only bigger.
Second trip, and for a year thereafter I would only eat the yakatory as we staggered home.
Ten yen a stick at three sticks could get a guy through the gate.
    Just sayin.
    Welcome home.

  7. One of the things I loved about Japan was the tiny restaurants. My favorite was a tempura place where you ordered as you ate.

The real question is: “Do you have a Keep Bottle somewhere and can I drink from it?”

  8. Skip- You mean the wasabi peas? They’re still there!!!

PE- Haven’t heard THAT term in years…

  9. I like eel. But then again, I grew up going to various gatherings where it was better not to ask what things were made of so that may have something to do with it. I’ll try anything once.
