It’s NOT just us…

Laura at Insert Witty Title Here had an interesting proposal HERE about going in and buying a place like this…

Well, during the trip out West to see the kids, I caught up with my old room mate from 30 (mumble) years ago in the Bay area.  Went up and spent the night with he and his wife in NORCAL (they bolted the Bay area 15+ years ago), and ended up at a dinner they were hosting for a few friends…

A couple of the folks I’d met, and shot with before, and a couple I hadn’t and their wives.  Miss “Vicky” made a smartass comment to me at dinner and I reminded her I had ‘pictures’ of her in her wild and crazy days; which then got me threatened with death, and the LEO and Lawyer looking for cover (thanks for all the support there guys).  And I happened to mention (deflecting the subject as quickly as I could) Laura’s idea.

It provoked a rather ‘interesting’ reaction…  Everyone of them kinda looked at each other and “Mike” admitted they’d already done that!

They had formed a ‘ski club LLC’ and bought a ‘ski lodge’ over in Nevada for market bottom price, 10 bedroom/bath suites, other ‘amenities’, and 40 acres of ski trails backing on a National Forest.

They also bought two old (Mid-80’s) Ford Centurion Diesel  conversions from and oil firm and had them refurbished from the ground up, BUT did not fix the interiors or repaint em (so they basically look like beaters) and also had hidden disconnects put in so you can’t start em anyway…

And I’m betting there are a few more things they’ve done, as I noticed one of “Mike’s” safes is missing, and his ammo stocks are a LOT lower than they used to be, and at least one reloading set up is not there anymore. And I know he knows electronics and physical security… Just sayin…

The had apparently gotten the idea from one of the guys brothers who is involved with a similar group of ‘nature conservationists’ in Nebraska…

So apparently we’re not totally crazy…

And THAT really scares me…

  1. I concur. The thinking is sound. Best I can do here is limited but I still have places to bug out to. It would depend on the situation though.

  2. They’re way ahead of me, but I hate going UP to Nevada and don’t have the spare cash either. Maybe the Trinity Alps would be good.

  3. Concur. Good planning; I’ll do something like it here, as soon as the right opportunity presents itself.

  4. If it gets THAT bad those people will fall to the first marauding gang that comes along.

  5. Good planning, and the worst that happens is that they have a great camping lodge to take the kids and grandkids to.

  6. There will be 2 groups left when the SHTF….Marauding gangs and their serfs….and those of us who prep.

Likely, many of the gangs will feast on lone preppers for a while after they use everyone else up.

Then they’ll break their teeth on the rest of us.

A place to bail out to is a good idea, but you’d better have a plan and friends.

  7. They have a good idea, So far I will go with the survive in place belief until I am successful in finding a bolthole to hide in for a year or so until the spasm of killing and looting has expired then like the groundhog, check his surroundings.

  8. Carteach0- Yep, sigh…

    Keads- Concur

    DC- It’s all situation dependant

    Rev- see above

    Alan- I don’t think so… Just sayin…

    WSF- understood

    ADM- Yep

DB- A few of them are still crazy enough to actually ski for fun…LOL

    MrB- Agreed

    MrG- Situation dependant as always

  9. I’ve come to the realization, that, if given enough time, I’m Bugging Out to my Family’s “Retreat” in the hills of Southern Ohio down by the River. But I wish I had the money to move to the InterMountain West.

I’ve also have mentally divided people into 2 categories: If the SHTF, do I take them with me, or do they stay behind?

    You’re in.

  10. Interesting ..
However I just cant see the point myself . Who would want to be out in the sticks like that anyway ?

  11. As DaddyBear notes, the “worst” this investment can bring is a nice place for vacations. My GrandPa used to say “Buy land, they’re not making it anymore”.
Kudo to the group for using some OpSec WRT their trucks and “intended use”.
As Mr B notes, plans and friends (including family as opposed to relatives) are two things you can be making NOW. Fitness and skills are things you can be enhancing NOW
For those who are still unsure of the prudence of such things … well, I wish you luck…

  12. Les- Thanks! 🙂

FD- Major population center vs. sticks? Sticks for me…

    BG- Concur with all!

  13. Fortunately, Murphy and me live in “the sticks”, so our plans revolve around cutting the road that would allow marauders and other unprepared second-handers to stream into our area from the big urban area to the east. But you…you’ve got a pass and room awaiting if you can get here. Bring a dish to pass.

    And beer.

  14. Well ok NFO , i guess if you insist . For myself i guess i just love my cosmopolitan , metropolitan life too much to give it up . But hey if you decide you want all the advantages we have feel free to visit any time you like , for as long as you like .

  15. I’ve actually been thinking that learning everything I can about early steam engines and building a few for practice might be a handy skill for the future.

  16. I understand the philosophy. That being said, I have no intention of leaving Connecticut even if the northeast coast is a terrible spot to be (of course if everybody moved to the good spot…). God willing I will be buried in the same cemetery as the last six generations of my family. (technically five, my parents are still alive) Bugging out isn’t an option, being thrown out by the tax man…well, we won’t talk about that.
That being said, what I can do is improve the quality of the land, rejuvenate the old orchard, increase the woodlot, get the major house repairs done. etc. No debt, no deferred maintenance and a quality piece of land and water. Could be worse.

  17. Murph/FD- Thanks!

Robert- Knowing how to do ‘something’ is important!

Aca- Your point is well taken, and NOT owing lots of $$ is a plus.
