Memories…

Borepatch’s post HERE about Indigo Girls and travelling sent me down memory lane this morning…

I can remember hearing that song on the radio when it first came out, because driving cross country in the 70s, 80s, 90s, about all you got were country stations at night…

This song captured our feelings better than most back in the day, and another one I remember from when it was released…

And this was our ‘theme song’ when we were on the road, because of what we did…

One of the pilots was a country music fan, and lots of the military clubs still had juke boxes in them, usually with a few country songs on them… While Johnny Cash’s version is probably the ‘iconic’ version, Elvis had done a cover of this in 1970 and that was the one we ended up playing the most…

Memories are a funny thing, you mostly remember the good, very seldom the bad, and always remember the weird, humorous, or strange things that happened…

And sadly, this one is STILL pretty much my life, except there is no one left at home anymore…

I envy y’all that actually have stable lives, surrounded by family, friends and actually able to PLAN things more than two days in advance…

Oh well, enough of this mauldin crap… Y’all have a good weekend!!!

  1. I know this won’t help much, but if you’re ever in Anchorage long enough, e-mail me & I’ll meet you wherever. You’re family to me, and breakfast/lunch/dinner’s on me.

  2. I remember all three songs – and all sorts of things that went with them, both good and bad.

And juke boxes that took coins, not bills or credit cards – and that played 45s (vinyl records, not caliber).

Yeah, memory lane is a mostly pleasant road, but it does have a few potholes…

  3. We’ll keep the home fires burning–you’ve always got a place to stop if you need one.

I’ve never had a job that required traveling, but I’ve done my share of moving over the years.

    Not easy at all.

Ghost Riders In the Sky is one of my favorite songs (nobody sang it like Johnny Cash though) and I can see how it would be an anthem for y’all.

  4. 45er- Tryin 🙂

Rev- Thanks, and I ‘might’ just do that 🙂

    Tim- Ain’t THAT the truth!

    Mikey/Danny- What can I say…LOL

    MC- Thanks!

  5. I have out lived all of my family and most of my friends.
I only have one old friend left.
I do still have friends, but they are younger, most are way younger, and I can not relate to them very well; we do not have enough in common.
They do not understand my tears when I speak of Korea in the fifties or of Vietnam in the sixties-seventies.
They think I am just some old military fool with no brain who flies the flag 24/7/365.
My generation, and the generations before me, left them a free country and they have thrown it away.

  6. Sympathies and empathies [did I just make that one up?] my friend. I tried it for 13 years. Made a bunch of money and lost a lot of life. I quit it too late.

Not sure which is worse. Traveling and knowing there is nobody to come home to, or not traveling and still being alone.

We still need to actually meet. You know how to get in touch with me. Next time you’re in DFW area ring me. I’ll buy the first round if you’ll get the rest.

  7. Love those tunes too!

And if you are ever on my side of Australia, my couch, my tv (hmm.. okay AND the remote – I am such a giving soul ;D) and the internet are all yours my friend

    Pax

  8. Door’s Open for you 24/7, Shipmate. Soft Rack, Hot Chow, even got a spare Piece or two if yours gets lost on the way. Just keep your hands off the Wife, Flyboy! ; )

  9. Gawd, I did it for twenty five years or more.
The new bride had to fly to me most times to see if I was worth it.
After watching this she said ” I hated putting you on those planes”.
After we were married it got to the point of “where are you going next, and will the company let me see you”.
We were lucky, and it worked.

  10. WSF- Yeah, but you’re doing it by CHOICE!

    Les- Thanks shipmate!

Skip- Then you REALLY got a keeper, if she was willing to do that! 🙂
