For MC and Ev…

MC and Ev asked for a couple of comparisons while I was at the NRA Convention, so here they are…

First the Sig P238/928-

Both are very concealable, while not necessarily “pocket” pistols, they are single stacks and very slim.  I found the grips to be ‘short’ for me, but I believe both would be very good shooters and could be handled by a variety of men/women.

P238- .380 Trigger pull right at 8lbs about 4 inches tall and 5.5 inches long

P938- 9mm Trigger pull right at 8lbs about 4 inches tall and 5.9 inches long
Both are right at 1.1 inches wide, and here you see the length difference.
NOTE: Both are SAO, no DAO!
A nose to nose comparison- 938 on the left, 238 on the right both weigh in right at a pound

Next up, the Ruger SP101 and LCR pistols

LCR Model #5402- .38, 5 shot, 13 Oz, Trigger pull at 10-12lbs DA about 4.5 inches tall and 6.5 inches long.  Honestly this gun just didn’t feel good, gritty hammer, clunky grip/laser and not my cup of tea…
 LCR Model #5402- .38, 5 shot, 13 Oz 1.875 inch barrel, also available in .357, but I wouldn’t want to shoot it…
SP101 model #5178- Trigger pull at 10-12lbs DA, and 3-5lbs at SA about 5 inches tall and 7.2 inches long. If it were me, I’d get the Hogue grips to prevent the infamous Ruger knuckle…

SP101 model #5178- .357, 5 shot, 26 Oz, 2.25inch barrel Heavy, but you need the weight to control the recoil. Good ‘feel’ to the gun, solid construction, nothing a little trigger job wouldn’t fix.

So there are my ‘perceptions’ of the pistols you asked me to look at.  The choices you make are yours, but I’d strongly recommend you physically handle the pistols in question yourselves…

And if possible shoot them too! 🙂

Again, my apologies for the lateness of the report…

  1. About the Sigs… You say they are SAO but have a trigger pull weight of 8lbs. Isn’t that rather a lot for single action?

  2. I own a P-238. It started out with an eight lb. trigger. After about 200 rounds it smoothed out and went to about 5.5 lbs.

    HTH, JBB

  3. ” LCR Model #5402- .38, 5 shot, 13 Oz, Trigger pull at 10-12lbs DA, and 3-5lbs at SA “

The ruger LCR has a single action trigger pull?

  4. Andy- Yeah it was heavy as hell… both of them were!

    Anon- Thanks!

    Anon2- Oops, you’re correct, I’m wrong. fixed…

  5. I like the Sp-101 with the longer 3″ barrel. No harder to conceal and a big improvement in the sight picture along with some gain in velocity.

Other than that, if you’re going to carry a 5 shot revolver, I think it’s the one.

  6. Thank you mucho for looking at these pieces for us! Not much chance of holding one of these without buying out here in the ocean. But I think I will do that and see how the three girls are with it. If no for them, well I guess I’ll have to hide it in my G string!! (G=Gun) 🙂
    Thanks again bud.

  7. ASM- We’ve ‘had’ that chat… 🙂 I’ll stick with my Colt 🙂

Not a problem Ev, sorry for the delay…

  8. @9:15 here …sorry to be a typo nazi….I’ve got the #5402 .38 l cr. I do like the weight but I agree the trigger leaves something to be desired. I’ve also got the 3″ sp 101 which I find has a better trigger but is a brick s–t house when it comes to carry.

Any thoughts/impressions of the .22 versions of these wheelguns?

  9. Anon- The .22 versions are, to me, great matches, since they are functional duplicates of the ‘bigger’ guns, so good training can be had cheaply (other than recoill management). Having siad that, the triggers are the same…

  10. I’ve never experience Ruger Knuckle, but I sure did experience S&W Knuckle last weekend. >.< That, topped with catching hot brass in my bra made me say a few dirty words. And I’m wearing a turtle neck instead of a tank top to the range next time.
