Boycott Spirit Airlines!!!

More BS from the corporate world…

Spirit Airlines has a no refund policy, but terminal illness is ‘usually’ a reasonable rationale to refund a ticket with most airlines.  However…

NOT in this case… The airlines’ one word answer?  “No.”

The “Boycott Spirit Airlines” Facebook page has seen its number of “likes” soar in recent days, rising tenfold to nearly 7,000. The social network support has come as Jerry Meekins, a 76-year-old Vietnam veteran with terminal esophageal cancer, raised a fuss when the Fort Lauderdale-based airline nixed his request for a $197 refund. Meekins was going to fly to New Jersey for his daughter’s surgery, but his doctor told him not to fly, citing his deteriorating health. The Facebook page blasting the much-complained-about airline already existed, but Meekins’ plight has sent furious fellow veterans and concerned citizens flocking to it.

  1. I’ll do what I add to the “spirit of discontent” with these bastards.

  2. Add several zeros after the 197, and that may be what it will ultimately cost Spirit.
Policy or not. Very bad decision on their part.

  3. I’ve added Spirit to the list of carriers I won’t EVER use. This looks to be the most expensive mistake they’ve ever made.

  4. PH- If you do, DON’T use these turkeys…

    WSF- Yep!

    LL- Thanks!

    Skul- Yep…

    Rev- Thanks!

  5. Never heard of ’em. And I do fly a half dozen times a year. Now all I’ve heard of them is bad. Genius PR dollars they are spending!

  6. Sorry guys. I can’t join in.

Perhaps it’s a bad PR move, but they had a no refund policy and people are all shocked when they don’t give refunds?

The time to climb up on our boycott high horses was before they enforced it and asked ourselves, “what if a dying veteran with a sympathetic story asked for a refund?”

You didn’t did you? Neither did I.

But they’ve always been up front about the policy and didn’t discriminate about enforcing it. I am willing to bet there’s language someplace in the ticket buying process where he agreed to the policy.

Where are our libertarians now? An adult freely entered into a contract and now has to abide by it. Isn’t that a goal?

I don’t think it’s a good policy for the airline to have and it will prove to be a PR nightmare.

This comment sure isn’t going to earn me any points, I am sure.

  7. A girl- Thanks

    Andy- Yep

    Maggie- Hope so!

Angus- Understood, and while we disagree, I still appreciate your posting what you believe.

    Danny- Yep

  8. Harper- I saw that and ‘thought’ it was a mis-print… No business EVAR from me…

    DB- Point!

Angus- Just saw that, thanks!!! 🙂 But a day late and dollar short IMHO…

  9. In all honesty they’re a shitty little airline and should be avoided for so many other reasons than a refusal to refund that ticket.

Were I in charge of the place I think I would have held hard to the no refund policy, but make a big show of gifting the guy his ticket cost out of my own CEO pocket.

Policy remains intact so the parasites don’t crawl out of the woodwork, the guy gets his refund, good PR. Everybody wins.

    Sadly that didn’t happen.
