Bacon???

ZOMG, no bacon??? Well, not really…

But to hear some folks talk, that’s what is going to happen. Less hogs ARE going to be be produced, but that is because of the drought there is going to be less feed available since there is less corn available (to produce the feed).  Feed costs are over 50% of the cost per hog…

Right now, lots of producers are looking at ‘thinning’ the herds, so pork may actually be cheaper in the next couple of months due to a glut in the market.

The reality is, in 2013 the prices will probably go up by 10% at the minimum, and if the FDA gets it’s way, less ‘local’ bacon will be produced/sold at roadside stands.

Bottom line, there WILL be bacon, it just depends on how much you want to spend… and it’s probably going to be ‘leaner’ than what you’re used to seeing!

  1. I’d feel better if I knew they were carpet bombing some of the Middle East with the lard.

  2. Yep, dry weather here really raised hell with my neighbors. Low yields, high hay prices, stressed animals – the result has yet to fully filter through the system . . . but it will. And let’s not forget the stupid ethanol requirements as well . . . .

  3. I sense a deeper conspiracy.

The hogs are being hoarded by USGOV to be air-dropped over Teheran when the time is right…

  4. Homer Simpson: “…mmmm unexplained bacon…” [audible salivating] >>>Pay any price, bear any burden, for the success of liberty thoughout world of succulent, cholesterol-laden breakfast meats !

  5. Most years in NE Colorado, there are harvesting jobs going begging. Not this year.

Yesterday, I was at a Nebraska packing (slaughter house) facility. Sign on the fence, “Not Hiring”. Never seen that before.

Won’t be long tell the old supply and demand bites us.

  6. We switched, reluctantly, to turkey bacon about a year ago. I found that if it’s cooked until browned & crispy, it’s an acceptable substitute for the porkier product. But now we await the announcement of turkey shortages, too. 🙁

  7. In-laws live in Fla. panhandle.
Wild pig are vermin. Taking my Winchester next time I visit.
I see a “bacon highway” flowing up I-75 & I-95 to be followed by crackdowns by the BAT (Bacon Abatement Team).

  8. I suggest that instead of cremation, just toss the boy into a pig sty. That will eliminate the feed shortage.

  9. Jon- If you actually get out in the ‘country’, they do have things like that…LOL

Stretch- Yeah, but if they’ve got Brucellosis you can’t eat em.

    CP- Good point…LOL

  10. Local roadside bacon stands … never seen one, but does sound interesting! I probably have not lived far enough into the “country” (lol).

And while cheeseburgers are nice, there is just something special about a well-done BACON cheeseburger (yumm!!!)

  11. You want hog, come to my neck of the woods. I saw two huge sows on my way to work the other day, munching something on the side of the road.
