Outta Gas…

California is in trouble…

The combination of the refinery fire, pipeline issues and the fact that no other refineries make the CARB (California Air Resources Board) certified re-oxygenated gas is having MAJOR impacts…

Gasoline at the pump gained 8.3 cents to $4.315 a gallon in California yesterday, according to AAA.com, 53.1 cents more than the national average of $3.784. In Los Angeles the price was $4.347. Gasoline futures for November delivery on the Nymex rose 14.34 cents to settle at $2.9429 a gallon, after falling yesterday to a 10-week low. Retail price movements tend to lag behind those of futures.
Not too bad, right???  Um… not quite…
See below!
San Francisco
Spot California-blend gasoline, or Carbob, in San Francisco surged 30 cents to $1.40 a gallon over futures, also the highest level since at least 2007, at 4:03 p.m. New York time.
Low-P, a gasoline station in Calabasas, California, 30 miles west of Los Angeles, stopped selling unleaded gasoline Oct. 2 and ran out of high-octane and medium-octane fuel yesterday, John Ravi, the station’s owner, said by phone yesterday. Ravi said he posted an “Out of Gasoline” sign on each pump and took down the prices outside his shop.
“I can get gas, but it’s going to cost me $4.90 a gallon, and I can’t sell it here for $5,” Ravi said. “If you come here right now, I’ve got some diesel left. That’s all. My market is open, but no gas.”
“We’re going to start shutting pumps Friday,” Sam Krikorian, owner of Quality Auto Repair inNorth Hollywood, said by phone yesterday. “Gas is costing me almost $4.75 a gallon with taxes. There’s no sense in staying open. The profit margins are so low it’s not worth it.”

’Squeeze is On’

“The squeeze is on, and people are doing desperate things,” Bob van der Valk, an independent petroleum industry analyst in Terry, Montana, said by e-mail yesterday. “The mom- and-pop gas stations are having to close down from either not being able to obtain gasoline from their regular distributor or cannot afford the break-even price of almost $5 per gallon.”

But… but didn’t they say gas was ONLY $4.315 at the pump?  And that’s IF you can find gas…

My daughter had to gas up today on the way to work, and Costco was OUT of premium… She said she paid $5.75/gal on I-5…

California is melting down, and when you add in the union problems, the taxes, the underwater budget, and now no gas; it’s a question of how much longer California can hold out, or whether they will have to declare bankruptcy BEFORE the election…

Outta Gas… — 22 Comments

  1. Easy to say, “they brought it on themselves” but doubt your daughter brought it on herself. It is people like her that will be impacted the most. So happy my son didn’t get transferred to the Presideo.

  2. WSF- Good point! And yeah, she’s NOT happy, since she’s ONLY looking at a .50cent/hr raise…

  3. The Plan:
    1) California goes bankrupt and asks for a Federal bailout.
    2) President Romney and a Republican controlled Congress agree; for a price.
    3) California (and all other states that ask for and receive a Federal bailout) relinquish statehood and revert to territorial status.
    4) Pres. Romney appoints territorial governors. There will be:
    NO state legislatures.
Neither U.S. Representatives nor U.S. Senators from said states.

  4. As Cali goes…so goes the rest of the country…as they say. I hope this isn’t a portend of what is to happen elsewhere:(

  5. I live in the People’s Republic of Kalifornia.

Fuel at the pump is $5.00 for me.

  6. Sorry, I don’t feel sorry for the dumbass in CA. They got what they wanted and now will have to pay the price or walk.

  7. Ed- I’ll defer to LL, he lives there…

Stretch- Oh man, I’d LOVE to see that!

    MrG- Concur!

    LL- I feel for ya…

    DT- Yeah. right…

CP_ Agree, but most can’t AFFORD to walk… Much less ride out of town…

  8. I like Stretch’s plan!

Feel sorry for the daughters though….maybe you can get them to seriously think about moving (almost anywhere) before CA implodes.

  9. Related note: Did you see where the L.A. Police Chief is NOT going to turn over Illegal Aliens over to ICE for Deportion. The story has the Usual Liberal excuses about Fairness, but at the end, it said there were 750,000 Illegal Aliens living INSIDE the City Limits.

  10. So glad I moved Northward to Portland (which by the way we Conservatives in Oregon freely state that Oregon has been Califonicated) where our is hovering around $3.90 per gallon and our gas has to be pumped by an employee (State law).

On a side note: Thank you for your service to your county….

  11. Charming. D-i-L informs me via FaceBook that she’s going from Oakland to San Diego this weekend.

But she’s in a Prius, so no problem.

  12. It’s a crying shame, but that’s what happens when the public servants dictate to their masters.

I doubt this will last long. The legislators will come up with some emergency relief from the exotic blends, while sweating out a revolt, where they’re covered with the best of pitch, goose down feathers, tied to a rail and paraded down the streets of Sacramento before they’re tossed on their butts at the edge of town.

  13. Now, if we can just keep all the people fleeing the People’s Republik of Kalifornia from trying to take it with them when they arrive in other states…

  14. MSgt- Yeah…

    Joey- Agreed on ALL counts!

Les- Yeah, they’re piling on… All that ‘domestic’ help would run for the border…

    Rosey- Good point, and thanks!

    Carteach- Yep… sigh

Rick- Good for her (until she has to buy new batteries and pay the disposal fee)…

Andy- BOTH of them are still there, but I’m working on em…

Jess- We should be so lucky…

    PH- That they will!

Scott- Oh they are ALREADY doing that!!! See Aurora, CO…

  15. “Good for her (until she has to buy new batteries and pay the disposal fee)…”

Yeah, I think she’ll have her Road to Damascus Moment then.
