60 years ago today…

60 years ago today, the Corvette was introduced by Chevrolet at the NY Auto Show…

Two years in development, pushed by Harley Earl it was originally a concept car; but so many wanted it, they actually put ‘almost’ the identical car into production that year…

Along the way, there were a few more…

The ‘iconic’  Gen 2 Corvettes…

1963 Stingray Split Window

1967 L88 427 Roadster

Gen 3/4/5 pretty much blah…

Gen 6 started the Corvette back on the road to being a TRUE American sports car with the Z-06…

Seven generations later, the Corvette symbolizes the American sports car as no other can…

I just wish I had the $$… sigh…

  1. And the newest ‘vette was just released a few days ago. It finally looks like a supercar. Quite a change in design.

  2. AZ- Yep, but ‘enough’ tradition retained to make sure everybody knows what it is…

    Anon- True…

  3. It’s on my list every Christmas. My stocking remains mysteriously empty. I just don’t understand why…

  4. I’ve been lucky to have owned two when I was “young enough” to enjoy them.
    My first was a 1967 coupe, 327/350 4 speed. and the second was a 1969 T-Top with a 427/435 and a 4 speed.
The ’67 was stolen right out of my driveway, and the ’69 got turned into an SCCA A/P car that I did OK with.

  5. Always wanted a 63 split window.

And then massively disappointed when I discovered I mostly couldn’t fit in any Corvette.

I actually wouldn’t mind if someone handed me the keys to a 638-hp ZR1, however.

    Just sayin’. . .

  6. “Corvette symbolizes the American sports car as no other can…” *Cough, cough* I beg to differ Sir! I will admit the 1963 Split rear window Stingray is sweetness and light, but well, you know LOL!

  7. “I just wish I had the $$”

    Don’t we all.

Heard a rumor that the nextgen Govt. Motors ‘Vet will be a hybrid…

  8. Stephen- Same here… sigh

drjim- I had two also, 67 roadster and 86. 67 was also stolen.

BZ- I’m like that with Mustangs… but yeah ZR1, throw me those keys!!!

    CP- 1968/72 I was paying over $1200 a year!!!

Keads- Your ‘toys’ are 12 years late… 😛

Tim- Don’t EVEN go there… sigh

  9. If you get down to Bowling Green, I can get friend and fellow shooter to take you on the grand tour of the Corvette factory and museum.

This year should be crazy at the Corvette reunion.

  10. Sold my C3 with the vow “Never Again.” If I ever meet the genius who engineered that impossible to work on car I will beat him senseless with power window motor. (Don’t ask!)

  11. While I admit to having a definite fondness for Mustangs, to me, a true sports car has only TWO seats.
    Anything else is Grand Touring.
And GM has a definite history of getting something right, and then either dropping it (like the Fiero), or coming out with a “New! Improved!” model that brings with it a whole lotta new problems.
IIRC, the ’68 Vettes were plagued with leaking heater cores and mechanical oil pressure gauges. A friends older brother had a brand-new 1968, and with about 1200 miles on it, the oil pressure gauge or line blew, and soaked the carpets with oil. The really screwed up thing is that while they “fixed” the car, they would NOT pay for new carpets!
Something about “soft trim items” not being covered by warranty.
They changed their minds after his lawyer called them……

  12. Gerry- Been there before, and it was a blast! Maybe I can take you up on it again; (we actually got to drive the C6 press demo cars)… 😀

Six- Try changing #8 plug on a 67 427… sigh… STILL have the scars!

    WSF- I know…

    drjim- Yep… sigh
