"IF" I was buying…

I might pick up something like this…

Cause the owner didn’t ‘like’ a single action after he got it… And wanted a semi-auto

Just an observation, it seems that the world is being divided into revolver folks and semi-auto folks.

I’ve had a couple of emails about my Pythons and Diamondback, at stupid prices; yet there is another whole group that is all of a sudden after some kind, ANY kind of semi-auto.  Colt, Springer, Ruger, Remington, they don’t care… There are almost NO Glocks, Sigs, HKs or anything else left.  And the revolvers seem to be pretty well picked over too.  Couple of .41s left around, but that’s about it.

I saw a trade today at the range, some kind of Sig for a Model 66 or Model 19, straight deal and cans of ammo swapped too.

I really don’t understand this, unless everybody is ‘trying’ to dump those guns with standard capacity mags that ‘may’ come under bans, but that still doesn’t explain why everybody is after semi’s…

Anybody else seeing this???  Or is it my imaginiation???

IF I got something like that, I might even go old school… 🙂

  1. If the shot is placed right when needed, old school works just as well. I think many are buying the semi’s just because they are in the news and they are looking for an investment…not for protection. Wait a few months and I think you will see many of them for sell on eBay.

  2. I just switched my nightstand gun from a Ruger 9mm to my S&W .357 Magnum. My boss suggested it after we heard a bump in the night and after clearing the house, I realized I had the safety on, making it a nice brick.

  3. Like many another, ahem/cough older blogger, I grew up with revolvers. Quite comfortable with them, in fact, and wouldn’t mind swapping my S&W 442 for something bigger.

Those days seem to be coming to a close, if they haven’t already done so.

  4. CP- Yep, just put the hammer down on an empty cylinder… And those investments are NOT going to be worth what they paid for them…

    MB- Good point!

Robert- They had two, but they were ‘pricy’… consignment guns…

    Rev- This one is .45 LC… 🙂

  5. There is something simply sane and wonderful about a single action Colt. I think the 1860 open top Colt just about the most beautiful gun ever, and the 1873 you picture certainly the runner up. They are pretty much foolproof and if carried with the hammer down on an empty chamber safe as houses.

  6. I love my ruger in 41mag, its a ton of fun, and a great shooter. I did today just have my LGS(Local Gun Store) order me a pair of Ruger New Blackhawcks in 44spl, yeah they are for cowboy action, but still they will be fun. I love my revolvers, but my night stand gun is a Colt 1911A1 in 45ACP, it just works.

  7. You forgot the contrary people who like both: I have a plastic fantastic (and it is very fantastic), and a beautiful blued revolver.

The Model 19 is far, far prettier, but even downloaded to handloaded low-speed .38 from .357, it still hurts me after more eight shots. The PMR starts getting ouchy after 150 rounds. But I love the revolver too much to give it up.

Your python is safe from me: it’s too heavy. But it sure is a beauty!

  8. I love both. I carry plastic fantastic, but love my 1911s and have a soft spot for revolvers. That said, you really have to know what you’re doing to carry a revolver properly and be prepared for reloads. My biggest regret in firearms was the S&W .357 I sold. Sigh.

  9. Count me in the ‘both’ camp. I switch between a semi and a snub nosed .38, depending on the weather, what I’m wearing, and where I’m going.

  10. I haven’t found a revolver that fits my hand, they all sit very muzzle-low (like front sight 1/4″-1/2″ below the rear sight low!).

    Got any suggestions?

  11. Vaquero in 44-40, Redhawk in .44 Mag and a New Model Blackhawk in 45 LC. I love big bore revolvers.

  12. you can never go wrong with a revolver, they just work, even with ‘trash’ ammo.

  13. I like my Ruger Security Six in .357 for target work. So accurate.
Frankly, a black powder revolver repro is a wonderful throwaway gun.

  14. Old surfer- Yep, that IS a nice one, and concur on the safety!

    WSF- Yep! 🙂

Bradley- Concur, but SASS is NOT as easy as it looks!

Wing- You ‘know’ I have the same problem… multiple ‘likes’ Sorry to hear you’re still having problems with the shooting though.

45er- True! Speed loaders or speed strips DO take practice!

Tim- Yep, ‘dressing’ for the occasion IS important! 🙂

Scott- I’d say get with an old guy with a revolver at the range. Sounds like your grip is a ‘bit’ off. I find that a ‘high’ grip works better than a low grip.

    Six- That’s a NICE selection!

    Duke- Agreed!

Robert- Yep, one is in my range bag every trip too!

Ed- You do have a point!

  15. I have several semi-auto’s but I actually prefer an old “wheelgun”. I have a S&W model 681 .357. I put pacmyer grips since I didn’t like the wooden grips. It used to belong to a police dept at one time and the trigger has been reworked. It is my favorite pistol. I can plink .38’s all day long(cheaper) and then switch back to .357 when I have it loaded for regular carry.

  16. Well, revolvers are for playing (targets, hunting, CCW), and semiautos are for serious work. I plan on writing “The Myth of the Combat Revolver” in a few months. It’s amazing how many people think a wheelgun can be a serious sidearm to bring to a war…

  17. I have mostly seen people swapping away oddballs. Folks ditching HK pistols in .357 sig looking for a Glock 9mm.

Also to a lesser degree a lot of hobby guns like big SAA magnum type revolvers looking for a carry gun. Trying to swap hunting rifles for AK’s or AR’s and such.

There are folks swapping more expensive but (arguably) less functional guns like cool old wheel guns for less expensive but (arguably) more practical guns like Glocks and Sigs. Conversely there is a guy with a spare Glock/ Sig and a few mags that doesn’t need it and wants to trade a pistol he paid $500 for into a cool older gun worth some money.

That is what I have seen anyway.
