This is one of those projects that will probably never see the light of day due to budget cuts…

We are at the lowest ebb for active duty units since the Carter years, and dipping further, but nobody in the administration cares…

Some of us have been feeding advice to DARPA’s ACTUV sub-tracking drone project for more than a year, but we haven’t had a in-depth look at how the autonomous ship will go about its business, especially when chasing very silent diesel-electric subs. Thankfully, craft designer SAIC has stepped in with a detailed video tour.

  1. But that is his goal..to deplete our forces, and leave us vunerable, so that he can institue marshal law, and try to stay in office for yet a 3rd term.

  2. Shows we have the “smarts”. Jury out on whether we have the “will”. Find a way for Obama’s bundlers to rake off some cash and it will get built.

  3. We are in boat loads of trouble because idiots voted themselves other people’s money and no national defense.

  4. I attended one of the first autonomous vehicle conferences back in the late 80s. I wanted to see if there was an application for the oil industry. What I found was a bunch of really bright guys packaging stuff to fit in a Mark 48 torpedoes. Big problem back then were sensors, data transmission and battery life. I told them that none of those issues would be a problem for the oil industry applications of well maintenance, seafloor survey or pipelay obstacle avoidance.

    And yesterday I read that the Russkies have a new “silent” sub!

  5. As a former STG, this is cool but why not a smaller underwater drone type thing?
