Attention to detail, yet again…

Folks, THIS is why you pay attention to details…

ESPECIALLY around firearms… sigh…

Sighting in your expensive new deer rifle

1. Shiny new, high-powered deer rifle…………..$ 1,200.00
2. Quality, high-powered scope……………………$ 550.00
3. Bore sighting device……………………………….$ 140.00
4. Forgetting to remove the bore sighting device prior to actually shooting the damned thing?

This is called a banana peel…

What you don’t see in this view, it also blew the back of the bolt out and into the shooter’s cheek and forehead. Needless to say, I’m NOT posting that picture, but he did survive…

Here’s what’s left of the boresighter… Worked good as a bore plug…

  1. Um, I don’t know nothing about nothing, and even I know that was not a positive experience for anyone. *shudder*

  2. The very thought of that same thing happening too me, has me almost OCD about checking the bore EVERY SINGLE TIME I pick up ANY piece and operate the slide/bolt etc.! I use the eyeball, finger, eyeball, and “do it again” method! Good post and always timely as I’m sure there is another person out there just waiting for this to happen to them!

  3. Phlegmmy- You’ve got that right!

EV- Me too! While this particular shot is older, there are too many people with new toys out there… If it makes ONE person stop and think, then I’ve done my job…

  4. A member of a mail list that I belong to ([email protected]) was a witness to this event. When another member downloaded these pictures to the mail list and our member set the record straight.

It is mostly true—EXCEPT, the injuries were minor, some temporary deafness and there was no ambulance trip to the hospital. If you notice the background between the pictures of the rifle and of the injured man, they don’t match.

This has been around the internet for a bit and someone added some embellishment to it.

Still in all, the lesson is pertinent. Make sure your bore is clear before loading a live round.

  5. Didn’t mean to come off as a know-it-all. It just happened that this appeared on the mail list earlier this week. I’ve since learned that there are several iterations floating around on the internet.

There is a good morale to this story, one we should all heed.

  6. Hell Crucis, I didn’t take it that way 🙂 I always do my best to be correct with what I post! I appreciate the correction… 🙂

  7. Re-reading this made me remember an incident when I was about 12-14 yrs old. My brother and I had found an old double barrel 10 ga. exposed hammer shotgun in an abandoned house. It even had a box of shells sitting next to it! Paper ones yet! So we stuffed, literally, a couple of swelled up loads into the thing, tied it to a fence post, tied a string to the triggers and ran it into the cellar. When we yanked the string, the gun didn’t so much ‘fire’ as it did ‘explode’! Yanked the post out of the ground and that old Damascus twist barrel kind of unraveled! breech area dis-integrated. We looked at each other and decided we were just the smartest little bastards around for not holding onto that thing!!
