Redneck Engineering…

So… my job was to get up at zero dark 30 and smoke the turkey for Thanksgiving…

Smoker- Check
Turkey- Check
Charcoal- one load… Oops…
Water hose- Check
Alternatives- Check

Besides it was COLD outside…

Anyhoo, here’s what I kluged together…

Propane fish fryer burner + fire bricks + 2 thermometers + 1 digital meat thermometer= I get to sit in the nice warm kitchen occasionally checking the temp of the turkey with a pair of binoculars 🙂

The only foray I had to make was to add a little water to the pan, and add Hickory and Cherry to the charcoal!

It was a good day, good food, good friends and emails and calls from various others throughout the US and around the world. I hope yours was a good, and you survived the turkey and dessert induced coma 🙂

Please travel safe going home or where ever your travels take you this weekend…

Now back to your regularly scheduled reality 🙁

  1. Went to daughter/SIL/Grandkids for dinner with Mrs. Crucis. SIL has delusions of being a chef and cooked the turkey. It turned out better than he expected.

Glad you had some family/friends to spend the day.

  2. My regularly scheduled insanity doesn’t start for another two days.

That think looks like some kind’a weird test-bed. How was lift-off?

    Happy Thanksgiving, old salt.

  3. WSF- No duct tape required, but it WAS available 🙂

    Crucis- Thanks!

Paw- Well, all of ‘my’ turkey got eaten :-0

Rick- yep, plus I stayed warm!

    Gia- It did 🙂

  4. Checking the temp from the kitchen with binoculars is cheating, dangit.

Our day was calm, fairly quiet, and didn’t stress me out too much. The inlaws went west, my adopted neighbors have moved to a personal care home & their daughter-in-law (who lives in Florida) wouldn’t give me permission to pick them up, so that only left Mama & Daddy as guests. We didn’t eat until 4:00, so I never even broke a sweat. 😉

  5. Snigs- Not cheating, nope, not even close… 🙂 Cheating would have been if I’d run the temp guage INTO the kitchen 🙂 Glad y’all had a good if quiet one!

  6. Niece and Nephew have discovered the Turkey Fryer. Two years in a row we have had deep-fried turkey.

    Nomnomnom…

I am amazed at how good deep-fried turkey really is. Of course, Nephew is an Engineer (with degrees and everything) and his contraption for introducing the bird to the oil is overkill, but we haven’t had a fire or an injury yet. 🙂

Glad to hear your day was good.

  7. Looking at that picture again, and I’m wonderin’.

Is that a can of Goex black powder sitting on the very top?

  8. New- I leave the frying to the crazy neighbor 🙂

Paw- it’s a remoted digital thermometer.

  9. Haha, that looks extremely dangerous – like it could just blow at any second. Anyway, good thinking on the digital thermometer and the binoculars.
