AGORs and Astronauts…

The Navy is building two new AGORs (Oceanographic Research Ships), one will go to Woods Hole, and one to Scripps…

AGOR-27 is named for Neil Armstrong, a Navy Veteran and the first man to land on the moon.

This is the commissioning litho done for it, and shows various scenes and all the airplanes Armstrong flew both in the Navy and as a member of NASA (He was also a X-15 pilot, and I believe actually earned his astronaut wings flying it).

ArmstrongAGOR-28 is named for Sally Ride the first woman in space, and this is the commissioning litho for it.

Edit- Roy pointed out Sally Ride was the first *American* woman in space. The first woman in space was a Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova who flew the Vostok 6 on June 16 1963. Sally Ride

Interestingly, both of these were done by Peter Hsu, a retired NAVSEA engineer who basically does these for pleasure and to honor the ships…

  1. Whenever I think of AGEOR’s as a class, I think of the USS Liberty and USS Pueblo. It’s simply a knee jerk reaction.

  2. Hang on. Armstrong flew all those Century Series fighters at NASA? Who’d a thunk it… especially the Thud?

That said, the lithos are way-cool.

  3. LL- Yep, ‘I’ did a double take on them too!

Buck- He was a NASA Test Pilot too! 🙂

    • They would be wise to ARM THEM, but I’d bet you lunch at Hodad’s that they won’t learn from history.

  4. Y’all Squids name things funny.
Dead Yankee War Dept. Generals and Native American tribes are much more straight forward. lol

That being said, the Neil Armstrong one looks really cool. Yeah, he was an Eagle Scout.

  5. LL- Nope, cause they aren’t…

Ed- I believe you are correct.

SPE- True… and yes he was!

    Rev- Yep!

    • Blast…I missed out on a free hamburger. I hate it when that happens ;^)

  7. First AMERICAN woman in space. Riding a rocket built and piloted bymen, after it became boring.

  8. Just a quibble. Sally Ride was the first *American* woman in space. The first woman in space was a Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova who flew the Vostok 6 on June 16 1963.
