Road Trip!!!

I’m taking a mini road trip, we ran over to Amarillo to go to the Panhandle-Plains museum and down to Palo Duro to do some research for upcoming novels. Peter, myself, and LawDog met Alma (all links on sidebar) at the museum and covered the first two floors in about 4 hours. Peter took a break, and Lawdog and I hit the Discovery Museum an AQHA museums in the afternoon.

Anyone that has ever ridden a cutting horse can identify with this one!!! Point the horse and hang on!

And this one is a much smaller statue inside the museum, I call it topping off, but I can’t remember the actual name of the statue… It’s that kick start in the morning that every cowboy ‘loves’… NOT!

There will be more pics next week of the museums…

Tomorrow is Palo Duro, then back home…

Road Trip!!! — 16 Comments

  1. Quarter horse: The breed of horse found on the backs of the Delaware, Kentucky and Wyoming 25 cent pieces.

  2. Love the old Western Museums. A history that is unique to America… though the Mexicans try to horn in on some of the cowboy stuff.

    • I also think I would name the second statue, “Lighting a shuck.” That’s an old western term meaning, “Let’s vacate the area in as rapid a manner as possible.”

  3. Pull up that right rein tight, and if you have to, bite the left ear. I never could abide that kind of nonsense.

I sure miss my part of Texas. The stars fill the sky from horizon to horizon out there. It’s quite a place to behold from the back of a good horse.

    • Palo Duro is cool. The ghosts and spirits of the past are thick in the canyon.

      • They are. The park also has night-hikes now, mostly during summer (ditto Caprock-Canyons). I’d still recommend visiting in Autumn or Winter, personally, but I like my canyon relatively un-peopled.

  4. I learned to jump on a chestnut quarter horse named Robin.

  5. Home sweet home. Caprock Canyons State Park is another nice place to visit. Along with PD was Quanah Parkers range. Want my ashes scattered at Caprock Canyons.

  6. The wife and I will be looking forward to seeing all the museums we can find after we move to Colorado.

And even though we’ll have to drive through Denver, I definitely want to see the Air Force Academy!

  7. I wish I’d have known, I could have met y’all for lunch. I’m glad you enjoyed yourselves!

  8. All- Thanks, and yes, down in Palo Duro near where the McKenzie raid took place you definitely ‘feel’ something…

Angel- My bad. We’ll give you a heads up next time!

  9. If you ever find yourself in Kerrville Texas (about an hour northeast of San Antonio), check out the Museum of Western Art, which is dedicated to the subject. Awesome place !

  10. Had a little Appaloosa stud that hated cows with a passion, and he loved cuttin’. If the cow we picked out didn’t move fast enough to suit him, he’d reach up and bite ’em on the butt! And, yeah, it was “pick one out, and hang on!” There were several times that he and I parted company because he went left while I was still going right!
My current pasture ornament, a 12YO Appy mare, works cows okay, but when you start out, you’d better be paying attention, ’cause she’ll dump you if you don’t have your head in the game! Once she’s convinced that you’re paying attention, she’s all business. Until then, if you find yourself on the ground, it’s your own fault!
