Thoughts and prayers…

Yet another shooting… 25 dead, and at least a dozen more injured.

This time in Texas, in a church no less. I’m not going to say anything else, and will wait for 72 hours to see what the investigation finds, but my heart goes out to those families and the entire community of Sutherland Springs.

And so far… The idjits aren’t dancing in the blood and screaming for more gun control.

Edit- I’m wrong, they didn’t even wait two hours…

Sens. Bob Casey Jr. (Pa.), Dick Durbin(Ill.) and Kamala Harris (Calif.) were among the Democrats who urged Congress to act in response to the latest deadly shooting.

Full article HERE, note the time line on the tweets…

And I did hear one breathless commentator say he used an ‘assault rifle’, which I seriously doubt.

  1. Some churches have been posting guards at the door. It’s not obvious that’s what they are, but I’ve seen it at two of the churches I’ve attended in the last 10 years.

  2. My small country church held a meeting after the Charleston murders. They asked me as a (at that time) ascribe law enforcement officer to openly carry at church functions and to supervise the 5-6 concealed carry persons in the congregation. An advantage we have is that it’s a very small church with everyone closely known to all members. This means strangers stand out. The percentage of veterans and ccw permit holders is very high (country church). What a shame it has come to this.

    • Big Catholic church in the eastern panhandle of WV. A lot of us carry. I suspect I’m not the only one who chooses my pew with more than just Mass on their mind.

  3. JMI- Yep, sad state of affairs…

RC- It truly is, and you are ‘not’ the first ones to have that discussion. I would say at least 10% of our folks are armed on any given day.

  4. This church is just a few minutes down the road; I heard the sirens of the emergency vehicles but didn’t realize what had occurred. Not many Sheriff’s Deputies available to patrol the county so I always plan on a 20-minute delay from calling the Sheriff’s office in Floresville until help can arrive. One must always be prepared and I will only attend religious services where I and/or other members of the congregation are armed. Kudos to the citizens who responded to stop the b*****d. And to Governor Abbot for focusing on the victims and to Sheriff Tackett for shutting down the reporter asking about gun control.

  5. If the stories are correct (doubtful at only 24 hours after) the shooter was given a bad conduct discharge for domestic violence/child abuse from AF. Not a dishonorable, so not a “convicted felon” but should still fall under Lautenburg Amendment. Yet they say he bought firearms at stores and passed background checks??? Does DoD not report convictions to NICS?

Background checks (universal or otherwise) will never work if states and .gov don’t report the “bad guys”.

  6. Barry- Thanks for the info.

Jay- Excellent points! And that IS the big question, apparently…

  7. As I said at Rev Paul’s:
I asked my pastor, years ago, if I could carry in church.
He asked if I could leave it in my car and I told him that would still be church property.
He said OK. Next Sunday, asked to see it.
Later we scheduled men’s outings to the range.
I’ve often been called to check the entry, but I am by no means alone in carrying at church now. Including Scherie. 🙂

  8. Terrible and something that could’ve been prevented, perhaps, by people licensed to carry actually carrying.

We’re breaking diocesan law in my rural Texan missions but there’s always someone armed at the back of the church. Just makes sense.

  9. Hey Old NFO;

I figured the democrats have a planbook to plan for every disaster to score political points for their agenda. The jerks can’t even wait for the bodies to cool and the investigation to finish before beating the tired drums of “gun Control’

  10. Latest reports are that the AF is supposed to report his bad conduct discharge on domestic violence, but for some reason his command didn’t – that’s under investigation.

More disturbing is now they’re saying he fired up to 450 rounds and that almost everyone in the building was hit, at least by shrapnel and that survivors did so by “playing dead”. Not sure how accurate that can be – might be media playing “selective reporting” but hadn’t anyone there heard fight back, now, and as hard as possible!

Sounds like a “stopwatch of death” situation where the clock kept ticking for at least several minutes (and likely only stopped when the neighbor made it over and took the shooter under fire.

I am seeing reports that the neighbor hit him twice – leg and torso.
