Old School Gun Control…

This LINK goes to Life Magazine and a photo series from 1956 on guns in schools…

This note attached really sets my teeth on edge…

[NOTE: LIFE.com is aware that encountering images of guns and children in a classroom might be distressing to some readers — even if those images were made decades ago and depict an adult instructing schoolkids in a rural community in the proper and safe use of firearms. Our intention is not to incite, but to add context and nuance to the national dialog around guns, gun violence and gun safety in the United States.]

Personally I believe we need MORE of this not less.  Eddie Eagle from the NRA is a classic example of a GOOD training program.  By demonizing guns, rather than the shooters, we are creating an entire set of generational prejudices that will come back to haunt us.

Guns are tools, NOT demons… And as long as these generations refuse to realize that, gun control WILL happen, and that will be the end of the USA as we know it.  There will be no way to defend ourselves…

But the criminals will continue to get guns the same way they always have…

Sigh…

Old School Gun Control… — 20 Comments

  1. We have to stop people in their tracks when they start going on about the need for gun control. I tend to ask people how many criminals they know who obey the law.

  2. I was going to watch that ABC special ‘Kids and Guns’ last night, but I KNEW it was only going to make my blood and eyes boil from it (The Stupid – It Burns!). Everyone is due their opinion, but I don’t have to AGREE to their demands, any more than they have to agree to mine. Demonizing inanimate objects – just . . . . Wow . . .

    • Well duh j.r., that ABC special isn’t until tomorrow (Jan 31), I guess I haven’t perfected Time Travel yet. That or I’m getting my feeling out sooner, lol.

  3. One of those boys could have easily been me. My grade school Principal used to go with us boys squirrel hunting after school. We used rifles, he used a .22 revolver.

It wasn’t unusual at all to see rifles and shotguns leaning in a corner of the school room during hunting season.

  4. Boy Scouts used to require marksmanship as a prerequisite for advancement. Knot tying is important (and can be useful in a loving relationship) but is no replacement for shotgun and rifle proficiency.

  5. If guns were an allowable elective, the class would be full and the students would pay attention. But for some reason our public schools are not allowed to teach anything that might actually be useful.

  6. I agree. I do not believe guns can be or have demonic spirits anyway. LOL. People can. I watch that Dead Files shit and The Conjuring, or Insidious. Not one of the guns on those shows got crazy and killed anyone. The demonic people did, tho. 😀 (((grin))). I have been a proponent of your exact thoughts here. I am so tired of the people that do not understand guns and are very uneducated. I would even say stupid. They piss me off. Not enough to kill them tho. And I bet my gun is not going to come out of the safe by itself to shoot up the place. Oh, that’s another thing you can tell them. We lock them up in safes so they don’t come out and just go on random killing sprees all by themselves…because sometimes you buy the bad one that wants to do that. Ugh.

  7. To think, we have sex ed at school, drug and alcohol ed, and drivers ed at school – all subjects which can lead a student to real peril but we’ve decided it makes sense to educate them about each item so they can make informed life choices.

But we certainly can’t have firearm education at school cause that would be scary, or something.

  8. Another example of how much has been lost. Those kids didn’t do mass shootings either.

  9. I graduated high school in 1970. We had a rifle club that shot .22 indoors at the High School. The club’s adviser taught shop and had his class build backstops. We were not allowed to take rifles to school via the school bus.

I’ve been watching this whole gun control debate for years, and I’ve decided on a brand new approach to the willfully stupid anti-gun fanatics. When they, the willfully ignorant, trot out the latest slogans demand that they tell you three instances where gun control has prevented a crime. Keep raising your voice and don’t allow them to remain silent or change the subject. When they fail to satisfy your question, start off by calling them stupid and ignorant, then smoothly segue into civil rights violations. Because, you see, the truth is that gun control laws South of the Mason-Dixon line were enacted to disarm the blacks and to render them helpless against the white hate groups.

Gun control advocates are no better than white supremacists and other racial hate groups. Treat these freedom haters with the same contempt you’d give a pedophile and maybe the gun owners will start to gain some ground.

  10. Prof- Excellent point!

Momma- Good points (and the stupidity DOES hurt)…

WSF- Yeah, that IS hard to argue with…

Aaron- Yep, but common sense died a LONG time ago…

Duke- Nope! And if they’d tried, their asses would have been planted in short order!

MJ- Yep, and confrontation with FACTS will blow their tiny parochial minds…

  11. Way back when snakes walked, we had the option of taking hunter ed/gun safety during our lunch hour, this would have been about ’59, I can’t think of one of my male classmates and very few of my female ones who didn’t opt for this.

  12. Funniest clip on you tube of an ATF or DEA agent teaching school kids in class a little bit on gun safety and just as he tells them that he’s the only one in the room that can handle a gun safely he shoots himself with it. youtube: “atf agent shoots himself”

I would like to have my daughter excused from any federal or police conducted training at school on fire arm safety. I took care of that already.
