Armed Forces Day…

President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.

On 31 Aug 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace individual services appreciation days. The single day celebration also stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department- the Department of Defense.

And has anyone seen this advertised anywhere? Any media coverage (Stars and Stripes DID cover it)???

/Crickets…

BUT they sure have covered the so called end of the world! WTFO???

Since I’m OCONUS I have been thanking all the folks I came in contact with yesterday to thank them, and a few (mostly senior folks) actually knew what I was talking about… sigh…

Here are a couple of pics of a “Challenge Coin” I was given by Jim Land. This one is pretty special to me. Here is the obverse-
And this is the reverse of the coin
Take a minute and thank a service member, active retired or otherwise… I’ve set this as an auto post, so I ‘hope’ it posts on the right day…

Armed Forces Day… — 14 Comments

  1. Great post NFO! I DO have the Flag out and thanked the two Gentlemen working the range today. Retired Fleet sailor, Retired Army red leg. Great guys to know.

Thank you for your service as well!

  2. Had our flag out this morning before I took the littlest pup to the vet.
I’ll be bringing it down right around sunset….

  3. I fly the flag every day Jim. It’s lighted at night also. Thanks for your service. I am always mindful of the sacrifices that our service men and women have made for our country.

  4. I haven’t heard of this…and my husband is due to deploy to a combat zone in less than three weeks.

Guess who totally feels like an ass now?

  5. The Commander-In-Chief golfed at Ft. Belvoir today. I think in his own humble way, he reached out to all American service men and women — through recreation.

  6. Like Fox our flag has been flying 24/7 for fifteen years. Lighted at night and replaced as needed.
In my travels today I looked…and nothing. Sad.

  7. WSF- Not surprised…

    Keads/drjim- Thanks!

    Scott/FF- Thank you!

mini- Don’t look at it that way, look at it as how F’ed up this country is becoming… You can thank your hubby any way you choose 🙂

LL- I doubt he even knows…

    Skip- Thank you!

  8. Msgt- Thanks, I got it from Jim Land, so it’s NOT for sale or trade, sorry… I’ve looked for it and haven’t found it anywhere else.

  9. Challenge coins are awesome, I like yours.

I, like the rest, hadn’t heard of this day either, sadly.

Thank you for YOUR service, Sir.

  10. My neighbor said, “What’s with the flags all flying today, Danny? Memorial Day is 2 weeks out.”

Ohhh, how dealing with the ignorant gets old.

Boy do I like that the Coast Guard is included on that coin! She’s a beauty!!

  11. Heath- The administration strikes again…

Danny- Yep, the USCG IS a combat arm, in addition to lifesaving!
