Hog Gun…

Following Frank James’ recommendations/research and our conversation at Pittsburgh, I decided to ‘upgrade’ to a bigger gun for hog hunting…  After seeing the FN SCAR 17 and talking to folks at NRAAM, I decided to bite the bullet (so to speak) and get one.

I finally got to the range today, and put the first rounds through it, and I’m impressed!!!

I got the ‘baby’ Trijicon optic for it, the TA-11E which has the chevron and BDC for the 308 round.  The top of the chevron is POA at 200 yards, the bottom is 300 yards, 400 yards, etc.

These are the first rounds out of the gun, using just the iron sights at 100 yards…

The first five rounds are lower left, and I (like a dumbass) started adjusting on the sights before the gun really set up and carboned up good.  I cleaned the bore after the first four AND made an adjustment (stoopid) which promptly got me too far to the right. The rounds did walk up as the gun ‘sealed’  and it finally settled about 2 inches high, which is dead on at 200 yards.  I kept screwing with the windage, and finally put it back to zero and left it at that.

I put the TA-11 on, and started sighting it in, and as you can see, with 2 shot groups this is a sub-MOA gun. Again I set it about 2 inches high to be dead on at 200 yards.

The felt recoil is SIGNIFICANTLY less than any of my other rifles, even less than the M-24 and M-40 both of which weigh over 14 lbs; and this thing only weighs a little over 8lbs with the ACOG on it!  My shoulder is gonna like this one!

I did finally get to put six rounds on a target at 200 yards, so these were a bit rushed, as they wanted to go get their sighting targets, but I’m pretty happy with those, the one on the far right was a called flyer…

Now I can go hog hunting and not feel like I’m under-gunned…

If I could just afford a good night optic… sigh…

Hog Gun… — 28 Comments

  1. Nice rifle. I’ve been looking at those for awhile, but I balk at the price.

Still, it’s a nice rifle. Color me impressed.

  2. Looks like she’s a hell of a shooter.

How do you like the Charging Handle.

I’ve heard it can be hard to manipulate with an optic on the top rail.

Also when shooting my FAL from the bench my fingers are often right on the charging handle. On the FAL the handle doesn’t reciprocate but the SCAR it does….

Wicked sweet gun! Love the ergonomics on the units I’ve handled.

  3. Paw- I had a whole bunch of overtime on the last overseas trip, that is the ONLY way I could afford it…

    Rev/Robert- Thanks!

Weerd- It’s pretty damn good! The charging handle is not an issue per se, but it IS tight with the optic on top. You definitely can’t grab a fist full and yank, you’ll leave a ‘mark’ on your fingers…

  4. Looks like a sweet shooter! Have you ever shot an AR configuration in .308? I’d really like to know how it compares recoil wise to one of those.

  5. SWEET!
One of these days I’ll get a “real” rifle. For now my 30-30 Marlin will have to do.

  6. Having shot one a while back, I applaud your decision. (Can I work overtime with you?). Seriously, I am drooling here. I don’t think you’ll have any bad words to say about this one.

  7. I’m impressed — and I really like the bipod.

It’s a good alternative to an AR style gas gun and I think that I need to start saving my shekles lest the Old NFO completely out-classes me.

  8. Shot a hog last year with a .308 out of a Browning BLR. DRT.

  9. Groundhog- I haven’t shot an AR in 308 in two years, so I can’t give you a valid comparison… Sorry

    Keads- Thanks!

drjim- Nothing wrong with a 30-30, that’s my back up gun 🙂

YOF- it ain’t worth it, trust me…

LL- That is a milspec Grip Pod http://www.grippod.com/gps02.html
yeah, right on the out class… I doubt that VERY seriously 🙂

    Murph- Will do

Cemetery- Not really, these are TOUGH old hogs…

    Julie- Thanks

Anon- Yep, my buddy had to kill the one I turned… I learned my lesson 🙂

  10. I’ve been able to play with a couple of 17’s in the last year. I’d been leaning toward the FNAR, but I think the SCAR will give the same accuracy with a tighter turn radius and less weight, although more pricey than the FNAR. Got an uncle who works for L3, so maybe I can get a discount on optics. Wouldn’t bet on it through, but he brings out nice TandE things to show me sometimes. Hope they’re still around as an L3-ish company by the end of the year.

    Best,
    Rabbit.

  11. Good gun. Good choice. Load it with 180 gr. partition ammo from Federal and you’re ‘Good To Go’ for even the toughest oinker out there. I like the ACOG, another good choice…

    All The Best,
    Frank W. James

  12. Rabbit- Yeah, especially some of the NVG stuff 🙂 Just sayin…

Frank- Thanks, it IS all your fault! 🙂

Andy- Next time we have a shoot, I’ll bring it so you can try it.

  13. I IZ JELWUS
I want one, I’m even saving up for one, but it’ll probably be deep into 2012 before I buy one.

post an update after a few hundred more rounds, I’m really interested in your thoughts on the cheek weld.

  14. Turk- Thanks!

Scott- I’m bringing it to the NE shoot 🙂

Sobriant- I do like the optional cheek piece. Without the optic, I put it all the way down and get a good cheek weld for the iron sights, pop it up to the second position, and I get a good cheek weld for the optic. I will post more later!
