Sigh…

I DO miss going out and doing ‘fun’ flying…

He’s 200ish feet up 🙂 And flying up a fjord in Norway.  Did that a few times tracking ‘various’ things in that part of the world.

A couple of pics from back in the day…

NAS Moffett Field, CA back in the heydey. The black topped hangar (Hgr 1) is one of the original blimp hangars from the 1930s…

And Hangar 1 today…

And one of my old airplanes, now a resident of Tucson…

P3 boneyardBetter known as the Boneyard…

Lots of hours of boredom, in the middle of nowhere, but we DID do some fun stuff!

Area 90

Also known as the North Pole, or 90 North! 🙂  Navigation up there was ‘such’ fun…

And yes, we tracked him all the way up there, along with two others! 🙂

HERE’s what we based our ‘updated’ navigation procedures from… And we were up there almost 50 years later!!!

  1. Two hundred feet eh? I guess they have very small feet in Norway. Must be the cold air shrinks them.

  2. Those straight, short wings and those four wind choppers — it could be nothing else. And a distinctive sound you’d know anywhere.

I miss the fun stuff too, even though I wasn’t a stick and rudder guy.

  3. Gerry- I ‘said’ ISH… 🙂

LL- Yep, and they DO sound different than a C-130!

Rev- They are one reason I can sleep through ‘anything’…

WSF- Norwegian, they’ve had P-3s almost as long as we have!

Old AF- Yep, another great airplane will be history in 2019…

  4. Mad Jack- Thanks! The only one I can take credit for is the P-3 over the sub. The others are from various friends.

  5. I have to get my CFI renewed next month, even if I don’t use it. If I could play with those, I would use it more.

  6. Yep. Got time in all three of those hangers.

    Lordy, I miss it so.

  7. Was inside hanger 1 a few times, back when the daughter was stationed at NAS Moffett.
    Great pictures!

  8. ‘Eeee’s pining for the Fjords. Distinctive plumage on them birds.

    C-90

  9. We used to drive by Moffett frequently. You could see many of the hangers from the 101. I always wanted to stop in and see them. The stories they could tell….

  10. Brigid- They’re trucks, but they are FUN, overpowered trucks! 🙂

    drjim- Appreciate that!

    Rick- You and me both!

Brighid- Did you get rained on??? 🙂

    C-90- Yep, Norwegian not US

Six- OH yeah, all the blimps and other ‘airplanes’ that were operated from those hangars!!!
