Probably one of the most iconic photos ever taken from space, happened accidentally…
Historically, all the Apollo missions were on VERY specific timelines, required to collect data pretty much every waking minute. Very little thought or time was given to the astronauts for ‘sightseeing’…
And I can’t help but wonder if they got their butts chewed for using ‘extra’ film for non-essential photography…
But ‘I’ am damn glad they did!!!

Outstanding!
A grand oasis in the vastness of space.
We call it home.
Serious WOW.
Sometimes ya just can’t follow orders to the letter. The whole space thing fascinates me to no end. From the G forces at takeoff to walking on the moon. How lucky those men were and how I would love to take that trip. Thanks for showing this and I will post it on Facebook, too.
I remember watching TV as the Apollo capsule came around from the backside of the moon. I didn’t know about the photos until they arrived home and Houston plastered them all throughout the media.
Like PH said: serious wow factor. How we could have let such a wonderful start into space exploration slip through our fingers, I’ll never understand.
It made Hasselblad a household name – you can’t buy that kind of publicity!
And remember that this is the same mission where they read from The Book of Genesis.
Brave men!
Keads/PH- Yep!
