Range Time!!!

FINALLY got to the range to do some sighting in prior to an upcoming roadtrip…

Note to self (Again)- NO (*&#% coffee prior to sighting in… sigh…

It was time to bring the big gun out.  M40A1 clone, since the action is 2000 numbers high.  Otherwise, everything is USMC issue and correct.

A side view-  And I forgot the sandbag… sigh… IMG_1818

Since I got there early enough to get down to 200 yards, I ran the initial sight in from there, as seen on the left target.  The lower left was a fouling shot, followed by two at the lower left square.  The previous sight in was with 175gr, but I know I’m only going to have 168gr.  So I wanted to see what the difference was- Bout 2 inches…

Reset for both windage and elevation, got the elevation first try, missed the windage (must have gone two clicks rather than one).  Third shot was in the center.  People wanted to set targets, so we went cold and I took the opportunity to get out to 300, since another shooter wanted to go there too.

(Side note- NEVER try to adjust for both elevation AND  windage at the same time.  Do one at a time and save yourself the headache.)

This is where not having the sandbag bit me, well that and the coffee…

Right at an inch, but I had one flyer.  I figure for what I’m going to need, I’m close enough for government work.IMG_1819And I had to meet Jay G at the gun show, so I did a quick pack up and go…

Met up with Jay and we wandered the aisles, but didn’t buy anything of interest… .22 ammo is coming back, but neither of us wanted to pay the prices they wanted.  The usual overpriced guns, except for one place, that Jay ‘might’ pay a return visit to… 🙂

We ran into Andy at the show, and chatted with he and his young son (who had NO memory of Jay or I from last year’s kids shoot at Nancy’s).  He’s a cute kid, and into everything!!! Sadly Andy no longer blogs due to the work/family taking all his time, but we understand.

Range Time!!! — 20 Comments

  1. Its always something …

I keep an old bottle ‘coozie’ (sp?) with a muscle ‘T’ shirt in the shooting box for such occasions, the coozie will do a a somewhat credible job for a missing sandbag. Doesn’t cradle the sides of course, but will keep the fore end safe from rest contact.

Very nice rifle btw, you got taste dude!

  2. Looking forward to it . If you want we can go on back to 1,000 or even a bit more and shoot over the draws.

  3. j.r.- One of these days I’ll actually REMEMBER everything… sigh… Good idea though!

    FD- We’ll talk. 🙂

  4. J.R. – as a long term frat boy, koozie is spelled with a k.
Shooting those dadgum little bullets. Lol. In preperation for a possible upcoming elk hunt, I played with my 7mm Mag on Saturday.
However, the little sister was also out and about with her .270

    • Thank you sir, should have manned up and found the correct spelling myself but I’m realllly lazy on Mondays … :^) Appreciate it you keeping it real.

Another expedient rifle rest – tie off hammock above on single point and use that. I like hammocks a lot – consider them an essential piece of outdoor gear, mine gets used quite a bit when I go on hikes.

  5. Hey..any day on the range is a good day. Coffee jitters or no coffee jitters. LOL. Sadly, guns and ammo are very overpriced. I go look, and go back home and pet mine in praise. Although, I sure could use a new shotgun for trap.

  6. On the second day of a course, we had to re-verify our zero’s
The guy next to me and mine had opened up a bit from the day before.
The assistant instructor(bosom mate)asked if we have our coffee in the morning. We both said yes, one cup.
He said we must need several cups to chase the shakes away after looking at our targets.

  7. A very nice rifle indeed. It still looks like some good shooting, coffee or no coffee.

  8. Not bad shootin’, all things considered. I need to get back & finalize the adjustments on the Garand, instead of just holding over & hoping.

    Nice rifle, btw.

  9. Rezeroed a Savage 10 Saturday.
Sorta proud of myself…even after a cup of Mickey D’s.

  10. SPE- You’re young enough to ‘enjoy’ the recoil of a 7mm… Me… Not so much! 🙂

Fargo- Prices ARE finally coming down, and availability up on ammo! 🙂

Gerry- I feel your pain… sigh

Aaron- The rifle is MUCH better than I am…

Rev- Yep, that whole sighting in thingie is for a reason…LOL

    Dammit- LOL… Figures!

Skip- Those are nice little rifles!

  11. Back in another life when I was single, I could be found most Wednesday evenings at the local Rod and Gun indoor pistol range punching paper. Now and then it worked out that I ate an early dinner with a glass of wine before heading out. After one of my better efforts someone remarked “Man, you must have ice water in your veins”. To which I replied “Nope. Anti-freeze”.

BTW, sweet rifle. Sounds like it is old enough NOT to have Remington’s the latest lawyer-proof trigger.

  12. I’m catching some conflicting reactions to coffee mentioned.
Some, like yourself see it as a problem.
    Others, like myself, a remedy.

  13. That looks like way too much fun. Between work and trips back and forth to see Dad (which I usually don’t post so not to say “hey, my house is empty!)” range time in the last year has been proficiency and nothing more. Enjoy!

  14. I may get egged for this…but I have had absolutely dismal luck with Remington. I bought one of those SPS Tacticals and the thing was the biggest POS I ever bought. It jams. It shoots groups like a shot gun. I rebarrelled it to a Shilen match barrel and now it just BARELY goes sub MOA…and the feeding is still touch and go.
Sure, it was a cheap gun … but the thing should at least feed properly…and with a bull barrel I figure it should go MOA right off the bat.
I gave up on it and went with an M1A match gun. Different beast but a lot more fun, IMO.

  15. JUGM- Thanks!

RHT- LOL, nope it’s an early 1970 action, tuned by a former 2112…

Ed- LOL, it’s BOTH just depends on the situation…

Brigid- It was, and I’ve been in much the same boat travel wise. sigh…

Glen- Understood, and you’re not the first. I don’t care how good the manufacturer is, there are occasionally guns that just won’t shoot… I got one of those in a Winchester… sigh Rebarreled with a Douglas and now it shoots to sub-MOA.
