History and still in use…

Unlike the USAF, the Navy has to make do with what they have…

The Sub Base Chapel, built in the 1940s, ALL donated… Materials, labor, ALL of it!  Still in use…IMG_1920

Sub Base Pearl Started in 1923…  Still in use…IMG_1921

And Lockwood Hall, the BOQ at Sub Base, built in 1934… Art Deco and still in use.IMG_1922_2

The oldest building is the periscope shop, it was built in, I believe, 1921… And still in use…

  1. Couldn’t believe my luck when stationed there while on a Boomer out of Guam in 75. And, they were PAYING me to do it! Did the tower there. STS’s didn’t go to sub school in 74-76 much. Short bodies I guess. Didn’t seem to make any difference, I qualified mid 2nd patrol. Only bad thing, I got married to a mistake there. Solved soon after returning to Sandyeggo though.

HEY! Hickam has some old stuff on the base, as do other venerable AFBs. So, ummm… knock it off! 🙂

    • Tell “um” Buck. Look at the old planes the Air Force has to use! I worked on some of those B-52’s back in the 60’s & they are still in use. The Kc-135’s are just as old. And that’s the newer stuff1 🙂

  3. It looks like some boot needs to get some Brasso and a wire brush to that plack. Or it suppose to look salty?

  4. And don’t forget the USNA Canoe School… since 1845 and still in use. Mostly used to beat Army in football today.

  5. Hey Old NFO;

Yep the navy keep old things around for a long time………You should be proud…. And it should warm your heart that the stuff you help build have stood the test of time.

  6. The Navy always told us that the old buildings were part of the rich Naval tradition. Didn’t explain the existence of (abandoned) Camp Barry at Great Lakes in the ’70s, but I digress.

  7. Glenn- We’ve all made those ‘mistakes’… 🙂

Buck/Woody- Since y’all didn’t EXIST until 1947, everything you ‘claim’ actually came from the Army… LOL

ADM- Yep, the Navy has a ‘few’…

CP- True, but with cutbacks… Well…

    Murph/WSF- 😛

Bob- Good point, but that stuff is like me, old and wore out…

Tim/LL- Only because they got it from the Army…LOL

    Rev- Good point!

Dammit- Thanks, and the jury is still out on whether I’ve stood the test… 🙂

    Mrs.C- It is!

    Ed- Sorry for that… 😀

    Rick- You’re welcome!

  8. Don’t forget that some of the Housing on Ford Island still has some Battle Scars from 7 Dec, yet they’re still being used.

  9. What? No piccies of the escape tower? Does it even still exist?

Dad was working in the shipyard between 1965 and 1967. I belonged to an Explorer Post that was sponsored by the sub base. We had a rifle team that was coached by the base commander, Capt Purington, who was an avid gun collector.
