All good things…

Must come to an end…

One more bag drag and it’s back to the home 20 and reality of working for the man.

While it’s great to see the kids, they are now grown (they sure as hell aren’t 12 anymore) and have their own lives to live, without an old fart hanging around .  It’s been great to see them and the grandsons, and spend time with all of them, but ‘my’ bed is calling…

A 0400 get up is never fun, and less so as we get older. As I make one more search to make sure I have everything, I remember the days when I was a lot closer to the kids and it was a few hours drive in the car.  Trying to stuff 10 lbs in a 5 lb bag wasn’t required, nor were the hassles with the airlines, lousy food, and lousy seatmates.  There is truly a tyranny in distance…

At the minimum it’s a 9-10 hour day just to get across the country when you figure in all the down time either side of the 6ish hour flight (headwinds), plus the 3 hour time difference.  I’m ready to go to bed, and even the 1 year old is still going strong…

And another in time…

There are friends, grandson’s friends, animals that all must be catered to/cared for. Just ‘popping in’ for a visit is pretty much a non-starter without a lot of pre-scheduling, but that’s life.  At the reunion last month a few folks were bemoaning that fact, and how they didn’t see the kids/grands often enough even though ‘we’ now have plenty of time.  A friend said, “Well, maybe WE have time, but they don’t.”

All in all, a great visit (at least from my perspective) and there is the book of face, text and phone calls in the interim.  Now it’s off to deal with TSA and the airlines…

Y’all have a great day and don’t tell me the scores… 🙂

  1. Flying may save time in actual traveling, but it has become such a major bitch to do so. My first plane trip was from Atlanta to San Diego on an old Lockheed Constellation airplane. Not boarding ramps, just a walk out to the loading stairs. Some things have come a long way, but we pay the price in security check points and long waits for take off. Safe and enjoyable travel mercies, old man.

  2. As every year it is a sad day when you have to leave. The morning cups of coffee and conversation make the juggling of schedules worth it. I’m just sorry I had to work so much of the time you were here. Vito and Jace both looked for you last night and kept going to the front and bedroom doors scratching and banging respectively.

  3. We’d like to visit our mothers in Missouri (one is 82, the other will be 80 in March), but it now takes $600+ in airfare, plus $500+ in car rentals, plus a week’s vacation, to see each of them for three days. Much of that is part of the price we pay for living so far away, but it doesn’t get any cheaper. Easier for us to fly each of them up here for a week, which we do every couple of years. But at least one of them is now at the point where she can’t travel easily anymore … sigh

  4. We hauled-ass back home from Teslatown and the CrazyLiberals, glad to be up on the overlook again! Kick off your boots when you finally get a chance!

  5. As my late father would say about his Cessna 182.

“Time to spare? Go by air.
More time yet? Take a jet”.

Seems travel never gets easier. Happy landings.

  6. At least you’re going home… 🙂
I have another 3+ weeks in the barrel before I get on the big silver bird again…
    Travel safe my friend…

  7. You should’ve been on my flight back from the west coast. At one point, the “flight tracker” screen was showing a tail wind of 180+mph with speed-over-ground of 718mph. 😀 Sure made the long haul a lot shorter!

  8. Travel anywhere by any means is never easy. We went to Florida for the weekend and traffic getting out of SC was horrible to say the lest. from 26 down to the stateline it was maybe moving 10mph.
Therefore on the way home we got off on to 301 once we crossed back in to SC. much easier drive, way less traffic.

Safe travels to you..and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  9. We traveled to Florida this past weekend and got stuck on 95. From 26 down to the SC/GA stateline it was moving a whopping 10mph. Therefore on the return trip once we crossed back in to SC and again traffic north and south bound was a parking lot, we got off on to 301 and the rest was easy and breezy. I smiled thinking of all those poor people still stuck out on 95..lol

Safe Travels and a happy new year to you and your family.

    • JUGM- 95 sucks!!! ALL the time! 17 or 301 is much more laid back, and you actually make better time on it!
