Florida did it right!!!

Only 49 more states, 10 Provinces and 3 Territories to go! Puerto Rico
included.

I-95  and I-75 will likely be jammed for the next month or so with
druggies and deadbeats heading north out of Florida, because  this is the
first state in the North America to require drug  testing to receive
welfare!

Hooray  for Florida!

In  signing the new law, Republican Gov. Rick Scott said, “If
Floridians want welfare, they better make sure they are  drug-free.”
Applicants  must pay for the drug test, but are reimbursed if they test
drug-free.  Applicants who test positive for illicit  substances, won’t be
eligible for the funds for a year, or until  they undergo treatment.  Those
who fail a second time will be banned from receiving funds for three years!

Naturally,  a few people are crying this is unconstitutional.
How  is this unconstitutional?  It’s a legal requirement that persons
applying for a number of government jobs have to pass drug tests in order
to get the job, so why not those who receive  welfare from the government?

Let’s  get welfare back to the ones who need it, not to those who won’t get a job.

Edit- Well crap… It’s already been declared unconstitutional… HERE.  h/t Steve

And while I’m at it, I have another question…

I don’t hear anybody complaining that having to have an ID card for Obummercare is racist…Why can’t that SAME government ID be used as an ID for voting??? Oh wait, THAT is racist…

Can somebody ‘splain that to me?

Florida did it right!!! — 23 Comments

  1. Finally! And from the state which counted ‘hanging chads’ no less – I’m impressed ! :^)

I wish Texas did that too. Why in the world should any one who uses illegal drugs as a regular basis receive any benefits from the public dole ? Its your life, but why should we all have to pay for your habit ?

Kill yourself on your own time.

  2. It’s both racist and Islamophobic, and I fear that it will lead to global warming/global cooling/climate disruption/climate change or weather.

But seriously, if all the Red states could do this, it would flood the blue states with their constituents.

    • Hey, I live in a Blue state. Cut us a little slack will you. I pay enough taxes already.

  3. j.r.- Agreed!

    LL- That it would! 🙂

Adam- Sorry, but you know it’d never pass in your state!

Ed- It never has been… sigh

  4. Michigan is supposed to be doing a trial in 3 counties this year. If it works, it will be rolled out across the state. If you are suspected of doing drugs, you get tested, if you fail, you are offered treatment. If you refuse, or if you fail treatment, your benefits will be yanked.

I have no problem with this. I have had to get drug tested for every job I have ever had in the past 25 years, both before and after being hired, if it ever came back positive, it was grounds for immediate dismissal. This was in the private sector.

If folks really want to do drugs, I see no reason why I should pay for their lousy habits. I pay for my own, they should pay for theirs. 🙂

  5. I’ve heard over and over that very few welfare cases are using illegal drugs; I guess this is a great way to prove it.

  6. OMG! Drug testing for welfare??

Why can’t Fornicalia get that? Oh that’s right. It’s too reasonable and logical and rational.

That is a GREAT law. Too bad it’s not national.

  7. In principle the idea has a certain charm but I’m concerned about two things. Effectiveness and cost. Any test which would be at a low price point is likely to either test only for a single drug or have poor specificity across multiple types. The false positive rate will be a major concern.
If the test is more robust what will it cost? Will that presumably high cost act as a barrier to the drug-free destitute?

  8. They were working on that when we left. I totally agree, if you have to be drug tested in the military, and to get a job..why not to receive welfare? Rep Corrine Brown will come unglued over this one

  9. Well, I can explain it to you.

That is no guarantee that it will actually make SENSE, but I can EXPLAIN it to you.

Burbon may help in the understanding part. For it making sense, it may require several blows to the head.

In most states, ID can be had for no charge by economically depressed folks. (It is available in Illinois, land of the graft, for no charge.)

Now drug tests cost on average about $25 a pop. It tests for all sorts of illegal substances. $25 isn’t much for someone freshly out of work. And with volume, come discounts that the state can get to the cost for the lesser advantaged. Now with drug tests, you do have to announce any medications you are on because some of them will test positive on drug tests. (Like Oxycotin and other narcotics for pain.)

The contention that requiring persons who are non-white to produce ID is alledgedly racist because non-whites still make up a majority of the poor. (Yes, the people who say this continue to miss that whole “coorelation does not equal causation” thing. ) So it is not logical that this should be racist.

Heck, my friends who are non-white don’t have a problem showing ID to vote.

  10. Don’t get too excited. It will be ruled unconstitutional in a year.

  11. I don’t see the problem. People are raising fits because so many would be denied benefits. Too bad. Get clean. Get a job. Become a pot farmer. Just don’t make me pay for it. In other news…Florida is falling to some crazy crime stories of late.

  12. It is racist because you are using a white card for a red vote. By the way, Republicans should be blue because communism is associated with the red color. I have no idea really. Wyoming and Indiana voting places all required me to turn over my ID to vote and match my name to the one on the list.
