  1. Bam! That was an awesome reality check. Nuff said is right.

  2. I was always very proud to help be a part of the team that got them to the beach and then went in ahead of them to keep them safe.

  3. Marines, once again, riding the short bus to logic school.

The list shows an amusing level of ignorance about how the US military is created and maintained and even how and why individual members of the service find themselves assigned to a certain warship. Paint on the side of a ship is NOT a policy statement and does not speak with the authority of the US Government, the Ship’s captain, or even the able-bodied seaman who had to paint it. (Marines don’t own the ship they ride on).

And does the “here” in “why we are here” also apply to when the ship is tied up pier-side 6 months out of the year in Mayport?

  4. Prof Hale – Are you for real. Slogans are what helped this country become the US of A. And for your info, there are NO able bodied seaman in the US Navy.

  5. I am completely for real.

Substitute “lowest ranking untrained naval service member” for “able bodied seaman” and it still works.

An empty slogan teaches the members that their job is so pointless or misguided that even the people coming up with slogans can’t come up with something honest to say about it. What you say about a job should accurately reflect that job and the ways and means should lead to the ends.

In the brief period at the end of Desert Storm, the HQ US Army declared that their motto was “Relevant and ready” and they had this put at the bottom of all their slide shows. As if saying it often enough would keep people from noticing that the Army at that time was neither. Bad mottos make fools of us all.

  6. “Able Bodied Seaman” = “Graphic artist’s mate, 2nd class”?

  7. All- Let’s keep it clean. Prof, the IWO did this as a reminder to the Marines aboard there is a reason they are floating on the boat. An able bodied seaman is a civilian ‘rate’ if you will for the lowest trained personnel certified by maritime organizations for at sea pay. Probably the closest USN rate would be Bosun’s Mate.

    Posted from my iPhone.

  8. The list will, unfortunately, grow longer before this mighty warship reaches the end of her service life.

    Jus’ commentin’

  9. Yes, the list will undoubtedly grow longer if we continue to try to deal with medieval savages by taking half-hearted measures. “They just need jobs.” They have “jobs”…slaughtering human beings.

  10. I recall a time when the Marine would list their victories, (from the halls of Montezu-uma… sing along if you know the words)instead of memorializing American defeats.

Even the ship itself is called the Iwo Jima, and not the Pearl Harbor. Ah, well. Times change.

  11. As a GWOT Marine, let’s not keep it clean.

You have no idea what you’re talking about “Professor”.

    Get bent, jackass.

  12. “Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering
if they’ve made a difference. The Marines don’t
    have that problem.” Ronald Reagan
