Hmmm…

Looks like we are going to get wet…

Tropical Storm Marco (possible hurricane) is pointed at New Orleans with a predicted landfall of Monday morning, then hooking west and ending up in Dallas on Wednesday. Hurricane Laura is predicted to follow and end up hitting possibly New Orleans on Wednesday then hooking east.

The crossing paths are unusual, to put it mildly, and the potential for damage is just flat huge… One hurricane is bad enough, but a second two days later… sigh…

The right side of the hurricane has the most wind/bad weather (see tornadoes), and that is the stuff that will probably hit us starting as early as late Monday, early Tuesday. That is also the area where the most rain is generated. The amount of flooding through Louisiana and East Texas could be really bad, approaching what was seen with Harvey (which dropped 60 inches of rain on Houston). Louisiana is already putting up evacuation orders, which are complicated by the current WuFlu crisis…

In other news, Three Gorges in China is dealing with flooding unlike any seen since it was completed…

Extreme floods have hit China’s Three Gorges dam, which recorded the largest inflow of water in its history, prompting officials to assure the public it would not be breached.

Inflows to the world’s largest hydro-electric dam reached 75m litres of water a second, according to state media. By Thursday morning, 11 outlets of the dam had been opened to discharge 49.2m litres of water a second, the largest release since its construction.

Full article, HERE.

Here is an 8 minute video on the current status of Three Gorges and downstream…

Thankfully, at least for now, there aren’t any tropical cyclones or typhoons headed their way, but it is early in the typhoon season. Bevi is the only storm in the area, and it’s heading for Okinawa right now.

Folks, take a minute to say a prayer for those in the paths of these tropical cyclones/hurricanes. They’re going to need all the help they can get.

  1. 2020 is such a wonderful year – what’s next – flaming asteroid impact? Election of Biden/Harris ticket in November?

(Touching wood as I say that! Either would be horrible…)

    • Maybe the last episode of Gundam Re:rise is going to ruin the whole thing.

  2. Back when I did some short term trading (NOT day-trading!) I would look into options on West Texas Intermediate (WTI) just about now. Timing the weekend is tricky, but when Katrina was barreling in and aimed right at ALL the refineries, and everyone was panicking to top off their tanks.
While gasoline hit $10/gal in some places due to price gouging, WTI popped up nicely as well.
Bob: Hasn’t Gundam been on-going in one form or the other since the late 1980s, or something?
    Enjoy THIS classic parody AMV:

    • Yeah, Sunrise has been producing Gundam series fairly regularly.

I’m a fan of the Build Fighters and Build Divers continuities, largely because less political world building means less of the sort of political world building a recent college graduate would produce.

I’m in the middle of watching the second season of Build Divers, and I’d rather talk about the possibility of being disappointed by that than about any of the other things I may find troubling before the end of the New Year.

  3. Tom- Don’t give it any ideas… sigh

    Bob- Possible…

Guy- Heh, that parody is hilarious! And yes, WTI is going up already…

  4. I’ve been trying to follow the happenings at 3 Gorges for a few weeks. For the sake of those downstream, I hope it holds.

  5. JMI- One hopes, but I’m not betting on it…

Nylon- I think THEY are scheduled for November… sigh

  6. I’ve got “shark attack in Devil’s Lake, ND” for September and “stampede of radioactive feral hogs through Washington DC” for October.

  7. I’ve got a photo of two buzzards sitting on my next door neighbors roof, taken on 1/1/20. I just knew it was going to be a stinker of a year.

  8. Been following the 3 Gorges thing. Serious, at least potentially so, and now this. Two hurricanes? Getting a bit Biblical.

  9. TXRed- THOSE I’ll take… 😉

    Fluge- Ouch…

LSP- That it is, in both cases. I just pray they DO NOT get a typhoon adding to the water in the Yangtze…

  10. This year is actually going a little bit better than my 2016 went.

Around this time in 2016, I was watching the first season of Iron Blooded Orphans, and considering it much lighter fare than my real life worries.

I don’t want to talk about my RL, but I’m in better shape than I was in 2016, even if I have a bunch of stuff I’m worrying over.

As for politics, well, I trusted the polls.

  11. Bob- That’s a plus!!! When given lemons, make lemonade… Now what to charge for it???

  12. Number one thing not to do when there is a potential dam collapse:

Line up right next to the river with your camera
