Who knew…

T-Rex had lips???

Theropod dinosaurs such as the iconic Tyrannosaurus rex have long been portrayed with their teeth fully visible, similar to extant crocodilians. This pattern of portrayal largely had to do with relatedness between dinosaurs and crocodilians and the relationship between tooth and jaw size.

And every little six year old boy in the world (and those who remember being six) are going NOOOOOooooo… Teef, they has big teef!!!

Sigh… Sometimes science does destroy our dreams… LOL

And this one from Norway is even more interesting! Some scientists decided to take a look at the farmland around the Jell Mound in southern Norway to see if anything else was there.

(Jellhaugen is the second largest burial mound in Norway and among the largest in Scandinavia and Northern Europe. It has a diameter of 85 metres and a height of around 9 metres. It’s difficult to know exactly how old it is, but has been dated to around 1,500 years ago.)

What they found was completely unexpected!!!

The Late Nordic Iron Age (AD 550–1050) was characterised by significant change in political, military, judicial and religious structures across Scandinavia, most clearly manifested in the appearance of high-status ‘central places’ in the landscape. Recent ground-penetrating radar surveys at Gjellestad in Norway have revealed a site comprising several large burial mounds—one of which contains a ship burial—in addition to a possible cult house and a feasting hall. This combination of features suggests that Gjellestad was part of a hitherto unknown central place on the eastern shores of the Oslofjord. If correct, the authors’ interpretations demonstrate that the layouts of these sites were formulaic, and that central places may be more common than previously thought.

So we keep learning as technology allows more and more ways to ‘examine’ previously unknown locations…

  1. “So we keep learning as technology allows more and more ways to ‘examine’ ….
But…but I thought the science was settled!

    • I learned in grade-school science classes that what is settled is the precipitate, not part of the solution.

  2. Tyrannosaurus Rex looking more like that of the Komodo Dragon: It matches; plausible theory.

Norway & ground penetrating radar: Very cool, nice to see this very useful tool be used like this to do actual archaeological research, rather than as a method to gin up hysterical claims as has been happening in Canada: https://tinyurl.com/w7rsz9br

  3. Hey Old NFO;

Nooooooooo, There goes my image from “Jurassic Park”…Dangit. LOL. Seriously….That does make sense….

  4. Regarding T-Rex, makes sense as a lot of toothed reptiles also have lips, like snakes, various monitor lizards and dragons, gila monsters, tegu lizards and iguana.

Dinosaurs are not crocodilians. That’s been known for 50 years or more.

As to the barrow mounds, as long as no barrow wights are found, I’ll say ‘coooool.’ And no flayed bulls or 5000lb cats or any other sendings, either (various evil spirits attached to burial mounds in ‘viking’ lands….)

  5. Re technology getting better at finding things underground. I always think when people say we’re running out of resources that 70% of the Earth’s surface area has barely been touched. As technology gets better we will find what’s down there.

  6. Tom- LOL, yeah.

    Ag- Sigh… Canada = politics!!!

    Bob- LOL yep!!!

    Beans- Exactly!

    WSF- Agreed!

JFM- Oh yeah, we’ve literally barely touched the ‘surface’…

  7. Of course. I remember. The men of Carn Dum came on us in the night and we were worsted. Ah! The spear in my heart!

    No, what am I saying?

No one should fiddle around with barrows. It leads to nothing but trouble.

    😁

  8. Theories, nothing but f-ing theories.

    Here’s what we do.
    1) Find dinosaur DNA from some source. Maybe from fossilized mosquitoes or trapped in amber,
    2) Using modern gene splicing and bio-technology grow embryos in a controlled environment.
    3) Allow the young to fully develop on someplace safe, such an island in the Caribbean.

All our questions are answered! What could possibly go wrong?
