A day that will live in infamy…

We are down to the last few survivors of the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor, and sadly, that day seems to be receding from our collective memories…

I know it will never recede from mine, since I lost relatives on the USS Arizona…

This is a copy of the air raid message received on USS Ranger, which thankfully, was at sea with the other carriers…

This is a hand drawn chart of the ship mooring assignments on the morning of December 7, 1941. There are a couple of minor inaccuracies in the rafts North of Ford Island, and the compass rose shown is off by about 45 degrees to the West.

This is the list of those lost at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. This is the inner wall of the Arizona Memorial…

And HERE is a link to the John Ford/Glenn Toland movie created to tell the story of that day…

Take a moment today and say a little prayer for those who died that day…

  1. ONFO: Thank you for reminding us. Seeing the oil still seeping to the surface was rather sobering.

On a slightly lighter note: I wonder what the BP and pulse rate were for the poor schlub who decrypted the traffic and had to pass it on.

    • Navy people will tell you the seepage is Arizona still bleeding. Legend has it the bleeding will stop when the last Arizona survivor passes.

  2. Hey Old NFO;

And something to think about, if Pearl happened today, a large chunk of our population would believe that “we deserved it for past sins” and would support the Japanese. It is a sobering thought if China kicks off the can with several generations of indoctrinations in the school systems.

  3. Even if they waited for the carriers to return and attacked in a declared war it would still be a long-term failure.

IJN doctrine to go for a quick victory had them ignore the real threats: the shipyard, the fuel stores, Pacific Fleet headquarters with the Code Breakers, and the submarine base.

  4. IYHO does Pearl Harbor Attack or JFK Assassination generate more conspiracy theories?

  5. Pearl Harbor. All the signs were there.
9/11. All the signs were there.
Among all who died were very few that had the responsibility for preparing/defending our country.
The bravery of those who were there and picked up the pieces cannot be denied.

  6. “a date which will live in infamy”

    Fuck Roosevelt but that’s accurate.

    What a waste.

  7. My Mom was 13 on 12/7/41 she told me they were getting out of church when a man came by and told the congregation.

On 9/11, I told my shift their grandparents could tell them about December 7th, and they’d be telling their grandkids about 9/11.

  8. Rick- Correct!

Carlton- JFK by a long shot!

    WSF- Amen!

    Heath- That it was.

    Mike- Sadly you are correct.
