Oof…

Well, another Foolzcon is in the books… 50 of 65 invited made it…

Some of the folks who were there! Pic courtesy of Cedar!

But it DID get a bit exciting last night…

Tornados (2 reported), hail, lightning, and RAIN (OMG RAIN) for over 6 hours! We got 5 inches of rain!!!

So needless to say, folks were glued to their phones/weather radar sites. Thankfully, where we were stayed safe, and mostly dry, but getting home was ‘interesting’!

Going up 287, I hydroplaned 4 or 5 times going under 50 MPH, and there was flooding!

    • I remember watching an Indy 500 race on TV in the early ’70s. The rain hit hard the last lap and the pileups on the final turn were quite impressive. Don’t think anybody got hurt, except the cars’ owners…

Curious how racing tires don’t do well in the wet. 🙂

I’ve hydroplaned a few times over the decades, but when I have time, try to damp down the getthereitis. Tailing a semi at 35 mph for 20 miles on I-80 because the slush in the left lane and middle of the right induced the mother of all hydroplane* events was, er, instructive. McDonald’s for a coffee was a relief, especially when the state plows showed up.

  1. I’m glad everyone made it home safe. I was a bit startled when I noticed some storm chasers on Youtube were in that neck of the woods.

  2. I was out of it as soon as I got on to 82 heading east. Hit a few minor squalls that didn’t last long, but oh was it blowing the entire trip. Passed a storm chaser at one point along the way.
No traffic until I got to Munster, they were having a BBQ event, and a lot of folks were leaving as I went through, but the cleared up quickly. It did rain after I got home, 2.5 inches.
I’m guessing the hail I was worried about never showed up, but just didn’t want to take the chance. It was fun being there though, so glad I went!

  3. Ed- Brand new tires!!! It was dumping rain so hard there were a couple of inches on the roadway!

RC- Yep, I remember that. And I ‘like’ the ‘Arrive Alive’ saying!

Tuvela- It was nasty up here!

    WSF- LOL, yeah, that too!

    John- Yay!!!

    Bob- Me too!

  4. I’m glad you and the rest of the conventioneers arrived home safely. You bought the storm that dropped 6″ of snow and hail in the AZ mountains. Who would have thought a whiteout at the end of April? Maybe if I’d paid more tax…?
