It wasn’t until we hit the South that we became aware of the ultimate ubiquitous meeting and eating “place.” That yellow jacket combination of bright yellow and black sign rising above an interstate on a 150-foot-tall pole or shimmering in the fog on a backcountry Carolina or Panhandle road.
The Waffle House.
They were everywhere. ARE everywhere, and everyone loves them.
Here in Pensacola, I counted roughly 16 on a Google map search within what we consider the Pensacola area. That’s before it stretches out to the wilds of the back county. And you know they have them, too – never you doubt it.

Yes, I know everybody has their favorite restaurants, but if you’ve been through the south, you have at least encountered a waffle house. And they are equal opportunity offenders, everyone is welcome, and everyone knows exactly what kind of food they’re going to get. It will not be gourmet, but it will be edible and reasonably priced.
You can’t ask much more than that anymore! I’m out of pocket for the day open Oklahoma City, dealing with the VA, so comments and reading blogs and stuff will be slow at best.

I miss Waffle House, Steak ‘n Shake, and Gates BBQ something fierce; Waffle House so much that when OldNFO goes to a conference and I know the hotel he’s staying at, I’ll look up the location of the closest Waffle House and email it to him, knowing that he’ll organize a raiding party, as is proper.
I have been to an Awful Haus exactly once ($HOUSEMATE said I need to have the experience). I sincerely wish to keep it that way.
There is one a mile or less from my house and another 2 miles farther. I frequent the nearest one and it is the place where during storm recovery I can always find out of town linemen to buy breakfast for.
Here in the Great Cold North they don’t exist, along with growing vegetables in Winter.
At waffle House, especially at 2 AM the show is the same as Wal Mart
There are 2 places you can go to get a consistently good breakfast, Waffle House and Cracker Barrel. And yes, the Waffle House storm response has been held out as a model for FEMA to aspire to.
Ah, yes, the Waffle Castle. The place to stop after a big game(high school) or a fun date.

two eggs over easy ,pork chops , hash browns scattered, smothered, covered , and white toast , with a glass of white milk . Coffee for a starter . Waffle House mmm mmm .
Huddle House good too if they are still around , I haven’t been south in a while , not a fan of grits , but do like hominy.
