Surgery… — 31 Comments

  1. Prayers for skill in the surgeons hands, and may God Bless you with Healing, strength and Peace. BTDT, my back surgery was last month.
The hardest part for me is following the Doctor’s orders for post surgery. Prayers for patience as that always is my hardest challenge.

  2. What MSG Grumpy said.
Prayers for good results from your surgery, and a not painful rehab.
I am doing rehab for a replaced knee, and mine seems to be going well.

  3. Prayers for your medical team and a short rehab. Listen to the doctor post-op. I’m now three months done with spinal fusion surgery and patience is the hardest part.

    Cheers!

  4. Hey Old NFO,

Prayers for a speedy recovery my friend, and remember “Better Living through Modern Chemistry ;)”

  5. I had an “L5 Microdiscectomy” 30 years ago and THANK GOD I had it done in a time of modern medicine…

    Good luck !!!

  6. Sounds like your best wishes and prayers are covered by the best folks. I’m throwing mine in too, I won’t bug you about rehab, I’ll bet you have that dialed in.
Love and prayers, battered warrior, from another brokeback (fused c3,4,5,6, herniated L5), old guy, Tree Mike

  7. Good luck and best wishes for a successful surgery and rapid recovery.

  8. May they feed you much happy juice, your nurses be the best, and the upcoming therapist be firm but kind.

  9. J and I will pray for your swift and safe recovery, that the surgery will meet everyone’s expectations. Also, mind your post-surgery PT. Follow their instructions. PT is as important as the surgery.

  10. Keep the faith. Follow doctors orders (as appropriate) and make sure your PT is certified in sports medicene. They make the best rehab trainers so you should do what he/she says.

  11. Prayers for healing and God’s blessings in all things.

  12. Wicked Wench is doing laps around the beads and I’ve broken out the BCP. Got you covered.

  13. All- Many thanks! Surgery was ‘successful’, home and trying to get some sleep. Some ‘little’ things to note…

Forty-eleven people all asking for name, DOB, what surgery I was getting. One after the other…for over an hour. Actually got into surgery on time!!! Less than an hour on the table.

One of the oddities, at least for surgery on your stomach, is that they intubate you whether you need it or not. Apparently this is because the mask and or nasal cannula’s tend to “fall out”. So you end up dealing with a sore throat… And if they give you a pain injection in recovery, you have to stay an extra half hour to “see if there is a reaction”… Sigh. Also, cannot get up while in recovery. MUST get up, pee, and walk when in discharge room to be released. Also got the touch/feel/strength tests on extremities (feet, legs, hips). All of that worked!!! Yay!

Post surgery directions- (multiple people) NO shower for 24 hours. Yes, we know the antibiotic soap itches. Deal with it. 2 weeks of ‘minimum’ movement, walking is best. Limit bending (as if I could bend to start with), 6-8 weeks to regain ‘full’ mobility, limit travel, get out of bed and walk. Don’t do anything stupid, no heavy lifting over 10 lbs.

Yes, you’re gonna be ‘woozy’. Don’t do anything stupid. No driving for 24 hours. Yes, you’re going to hurt. Don’t be stupid with pain meds, NO aspirin or NSAIDs for 2 weeks. Tylenol only, other than prescription (opiate) pain meds.

So I’m off to bed to try to catch up on sleep…

    • the whole name, birthdate, what are you here for is important. I was schedule for a CT scan and was in the waiting room. I do have a rather common first name. A tech came out and called my first name. I stood up and he said follow me. I went into the room and he started explaining I need to undress, put my clothes in a locker and do I have any metal implants or piercings. I stop him and ask, CT scans intact with metals? He looked at me and said you are here for a MRI of your back. He informed him, no I am here for a CT of my abdomen. Now he asks for my name and date of birth. Whoops, back to waiting room.

    • Opiates are the only thing that works on my broken (c3-6), herniated L-5, repaired, then some more abused back. Unfortunately it’s short on euphoric, high effects,(I could use some), but xlnt on pain reduction. The prescription WARNS of enhanced effects if taken with alcohol, BUT NOT FOR ME!! It’s like extra, extra, strength Excedrin. Yay for me. At 74, is too late to start smoking the happy weed? Asking for…me.

  14. Prayers it went well and you get a positive prognosis. As a surgeon once told me: Pain is not your friend, take the freakin pain meds as you need them.

  15. Yay! Take it easy – this is a good excuse to rest and re-learn how to move. Sending more prayers your way.

  16. Praise the Lord!

    Good ya still got grit.

    recuperate and recharge the spirit.

    Juan

  17. Sports medicine types should be the best (doctors and physical therapy). IIRC, the physicians are called Physiatrists.
