Ouch!!!

THAT is not gonna buff out…

Much of the world’s commerce at sea passes by the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. The reef is of strategic importance. In 2012, the Chinese captured it from the Philippines, creating an ongoing flash point.

In the latest naval game of chicken, Philippine Coast Guard patrol vessels received a report of harassment and “hazardous maneuvers” against Philippine fishing vessels in the area. Philippine Coast Guard spokesman Commodore Jay Tarriela said one of their ships responded to the call for help.

It was then that the China Coast Guard ship CCG 3104 began pursuing the Philippine coast guard vessel BRP Suluan. The Chinese opened up water cannons and began a hazardous maneuver near the starboard rear of the Filipino ship.

And here’s the video of the ‘bumper cars’…

Stuff like this goes on all the time, not just with ships, but also with military aircraft. The Chinese caused a P-3 to crash land on a Chinese island after the pilot hit the P-3 years ago.

They have continued to do ‘close approaches’ to P-8s and other military aircraft that fly in the area, and there have been numerous close calls…

I can’t help but wonder how many Chinese sailors died in this incident…

Sigh…

Ouch!!! — 12 Comments

  1. A crewman on the 3104 was placing a fender just before the collision, looks like there were 3 crew on the bow. If anyone was in the forepeak area, they and the other 3 were most likely injured at the least. I expect the CO of the 164 will be getting “lectured”, although we might never know the outcome of that.

  2. I cannot follow how that happened.
Why did the 164 even get involved?
Maybe we’ll win in the Pacific after all.

  3. If I’m not mistaken, the Chinese pilot who caused the P3 to crash was actually named Wong Wei!! I remember thinking at the time, “You can’t make this stuff up!”

  4. Over on YouTube, one person is claiming this is AI. If so, it deceived…everybody. Including the US Naval Institute.
That claim reminds me of schoolyard taunting.

  5. Beijing will have no sense of humor on this. Major loss of face. The number of sailors that died in the incident will certainly be less than the number that died *from the incident.

  6. Grog- Thanks!

Ed- 164 was running a ‘cut off’ move to force the PICG boat to slow/turn allowing the PRCCG boat to catch it. Didn’t work…

    Tom- Probably…

    Pat- That’s not AI.

    WSF- Yep!

    Steve- Good point!

  7. I suspect a number of Chinese naval officers will see their careers come to an abrupt end. Along with their future.
