Spending time with the kids, grands, and the dogs…

Mostly the dogs…

And another trip around the sun! Yea me!!!

Off to see the grandaughter get student of the quarter for 2nd grade. And I’m trying to ‘learn’ the math they are teaching these days… and breaking my brain.

    • Wait until he calculates his age with the math they’re teaching (common core).

  2. Hope your Christmas with family goes well. Be careful on the roads – dumb feral drivers make it necessary to pay strict attention to the road.

  4. Don’t even try to do math as now taught. It does twist the brain. I grew up with up to 12X tables memorized by rote and can calculate mentally pretty much any bill and tip, instantly.
    My youngest son is 34 and has to use his calculator for this stuff, nice that he can, but sad that it is necessary. The oldest is 13 years older and has better mental ability with numbers but not instant.

    Recall helping youngest with math homework, tried to teach him how I was taught, total resistance and rejection because it is “not how it is done” per his teachers. Sigh!

    The good, has a very good job as network engineer of major university, smarts were not lacking, just poor educational system we now have makes it more difficult.

  5. Congrats on your birthday! When they bring out the cake, keep the fire extinguisher handy.

    From one grandpa to another; when teaching young sprogs to make change, use real money. Tell them if they get it right, they get to keep it.

    When one of our kids was in grade school, the school sent home mimeographed sheets with printed circles labeled in coin denominations. The instructions were cut out the circles and use them in place of coins. You know, to be “fair”. IIRC, our daughter had earned the pot in about 20 minutes.

  6. All- Thanks for the good wishes! And no, I don’t understand this crap they’re teaching!!! Helping granddaughter and friend, and friend in 2nd grade doesn’t know multiplication tables! Hasn’t been taught!!! WTH?

    In order to save the world from dreaded CO2 and setting off smoke detectors, I recommend that your birthday cake have the candles set up not in decimal (base10) but in binary (big-endian): 0110 0011
