      • Sorry Ed, that linked video is showing up as “This video isn’t available anymore”

  1. Don’t forget the Japanese anime movie “Tokyo Godfathers,” by the late Satoshi Kon. The story is about three older homeless people (itself a taboo subject in Japan, and reminiscent of the ‘no room at the inn’ situation of Mary and Joseph) who find themselves with an abandoned baby. Hijinks ensue as they try to care for the baby in street conditions and try to find the child’s parents through their network of underground, underworld, and other types of people usually rejected by posh, modern, glitzy Tokyo society. There are lots of “12 25” references in the movie. It’d probably be be rated ‘R’ for brief exposure – there is a realistic scene with a mother nursing a baby somewhere. But definitely a Christmas Movie that you kinda only realize about 3/4 of the way along.

Satoshi Kon passed at age 46. Most of his works have gritty, realistic elements and he was unusual in the anime industry for drawing older and less perfect-looking characters. His other works include ‘Perfect Blue,’ ‘Millennium Actress,’ ‘Paranoia Agent,’ and ‘Paprika.’

  2. This year I recommend “Man vs Baby”. A must for Rowan Atkinson fans. Rated PG. Children of any age can watch it. Adults will enjoy it as well. I have watched twice. Is on Netflix. I know, Netflix, ugh.
    But well worth the watching.

  3. not quite movies, but shows i always watch for xmas are “the snowman” (david bowie does the intro for it), the selfish giant, the happy prince, the town that forgot christmas (charles nelson rielly was a classic humbug in it), and “the hockey sweater”. As for full movies, as mentioned “It’s a Wonderful Life” is about the only one I watch, classic story & Donna Reed is the iconic wife we all wish we had for xmas….

      • Ok, that went down a rabbit hole, thankyouverymuch.
        Another movie for the season:
        National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
        “Merry Christmas. Shitter was full”

  4. The Bishops Wife with Carey grant. Found that last year. New to me!

  5. Charlie Brown Christmas, the 1938 A Christmas Carol (with a very young June Lockhart), and Miracle on 34th Street (the Maureen O’Hara version).

  6. “The Shop Around the Corner”. Great movie. Best Xmas Carol is the 1951 w/ Alistar Sim.

  7. My watch at Christmas is the Hogfather mini series (2 1hr. eps.)

  8. The Smarter Half and I watch as many versions of A Christmas Carol we can find on cable. Use to be able to find 7+ starting with a silent version running on 15 or 20 minutes and finishing with the Patrick Stewart version. Can only find 3 or 4 this year.

  9. – Elf
    – Home Alone
    – Lethal Weapon (1, 2 or 3, don’t recall but one of them involves Christmas Time)

It’s a Wonderful Life is our traditional flick on Christmas Eve after church, and the Christmas Carol with George C. Scott as Scrooge is the best version IMHO

  10. Stretch- Yeah, the ‘count’ is down this year.

Steve- Oh, I forgot about those! Thanks!

  11. The Hogfather.

BBC 3-part special on Amazon Prime, based on Terry Pratchett’s Discworld. Quirky & fun, with an all-time best line about kids and swords and Christmas presents. 🙂
