  1. I’m a bit too young to remember the stations, but remember the brand names painted on them. There is a small town near Brenham Texas that has a few of these old buildings alongside the road to admire. Durned if I can remember the name though. Between Brenham and San Marcos – very little place, hardly a town in fact.

    Thanks for the pictures !

  2. jrg- Yeah, I can’t remember the name of it either… sigh

    Bob- Thanks!

TOS- I can imagine! Rt 66 is STILL a special place!

  3. Heh, memories… I worked at an Esso and a Sinclair station in my wayback high school days.

  4. There’s a town in KS that got permission to keep the Mobile Oil pegasus sign and neon on the old building. It is now a local museum of sorts.

I miss the Sinclair dinosaur. A very few places managed to keep it, but it has gone away otherwise.

  5. Not sure when Sinclair went away. Memories from 2014 in Nevada or Wyoming said there was a station. FWIW, there’s a Sinclair, Wyoming along I-80.

  6. US 50 use to be a treasure trove of such buildings.
As was US 60. Much was lost when sections of those roads were widened during “improvements.”
Large sections of US 2 are still decorated with such buildings.

  7. When did Rt66 get replaced with a super hyway? I drove it from East to West twice in ’77, IIRC. NJ to Silicon Valley, CA. First in my ’66 Ranchero in the Spring, with my ’71 Norton 750 in the bed. And, in the Fall in a ’71 429 Mustang, towing a 750 Moto Guzzi V7 Sport.

    • In October 1984, Williams, Arizon was the last Route 66 town bypassed by interstate construction. Williams remains a very charming town. We camped at a KOA outside town for two nights in May, to take a day trip to the Grand Canyon before continuing our journey. The neon on the main drag is impressive at night.
