We FINALLY got a weekend on Range 4 at Quantico, and since this is my token day home, what better way to “celebrate” than to go shooting!
Well, first I had to GET there… sigh…
DC drivers can be the biggest idjits I’ve ever seen… An hour 10 to go 30 miles at 0800 in the @#&* morning no less!
Anyhoo, on to better stuff-
Took my 1940 Winchester Model 70 in 30GOVT06 out to play today. I sighted it in at 100 yards and it was pretty much dead on!
Not bad for a 69 year old rifle (and a shaky old shooter that had WAY too much coffee this morning)! The round at 4 o’clock was a called flyer, by the way… 🙂
We immediately jumped back to 300 and then 600 yard lines before backing ALL the way to the 1000 yard line. Needless to say, I didn’t try to shoot the Model 70 at those ranges, so I got out the big stick… M-24 in .308… Since I was asked in an email what it looks like, here is the following for your ‘enjoyment’
On the line at 600 yards…
Here’s a look at the target butts from 600 yards without any zoom. Those white things are NOT the targets, they are the lane boards…
Here’s a (lousy) pic through the scope, the little white square below the 5 and 6 is the target.
Here is the 600 yard target- Winds were gusting 4-5 kts almost direct tailwind. I only guessed right Twice out of eight rounds… Dammit…
Basically I managed to prove (yet again) the gun shoots MUCH better than I do. If I take the groups as one group, it’s MOA, if I take the groups separately (removing wind function) it’s 1/2 MOA.
We went on back to 1000 yards, but all you see in those is a green blur, and we were shooting steels so I don’t have a target- I was 5/10 so I didn’t do any better from the back line with the wind.
And yes, I was high right on my misses again…
Now off to do penance, er…cleaning… sigh
Enjoy your weekend folks!
Lookin’ pretty darned accurate there! Well done!
Need to get me a nice target rifle again, had a nice 308 win savage 110, but sold it off.
Anyhow, nice grouping there at 600 yards with a cross wind to boot.
Sorry I missed connecting with you today. I would have loved to play on Range 4 instead of doing lowly chores. Ah well. At least the wife is happy!
Maybe next time…
Pax,
Newbius
Back in the day I got to shoot most Sundays with a Distinguished Marksman Medal holder. He had me tie a small plumb bob to the trigger guard to make sure the rifle was square to the shoulder. Helped overcome a high left problem.
glad to hear that you got some quality “range time” …. we had a busy bee at the club yesterday so instead of shooting i was scrubbing loos 🙁
Good job! Glad to see someone else get in some shooting time, even if I can’t.
My range only has a 200yd setup with a nice berm and ridge on the south and south-west to block most of the wind. I can get 2-3″ groups at 200yds with my Rem700 in .223. On a good day, I can put four rounds inside a circle the size of a half dollar.
I don’t have many “good” days. 🙁
Opus- Thanks, but I’m lousy compared to the folks I’m shooting with…
CS- Thanks CS- And yes, get another one quick, before they get outlawed!
New- Next time! On point, keeping the wife happy is “probably” the better answer 🙂
WSF- Good tip! My problem was the wind… It was about 10deg off direct down wind, and I just couldn’t judge it yesterday!
Julie- Been there, done that too!
Lawyer- You just gotta MAKE time!
Crucis- Sub-MOA is great! And I’m sure if you “need” it, you can shoot it!
Nice going! Sunny skies and time at the range. Sounds like a good day to me.
