The Ant and the Grasshopper, new version…

A valid comparison??? Maybe so…

OLD VERSION:

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible for yourself!

MODERN VERSION:

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving.

CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food. America is stunned by the sharp contrast.

How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, ‘It’s Not Easy Being Green.’

ACORN stages a demonstration in front of the ant’s house where the news stations film the group singing, ‘We shall overcome.’ Rev. Jeremiah Wright then has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper’s sake.

Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.

Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.

The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the GovernmentGreenCzar.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ant’s food while the government house he is in (which just happens to be the ant’s old house), crumbles around him because he doesn’t maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow.

The grasshopper is later found dead in a drug-related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be careful how you vote in 2010.

  1. I am just hoping either party puts up candidates worth voting for. About the only thing Ralph Nader has said that I agree with is, “If you vote for the lesser of two evils, you are still voting for evil”.

  2. One of my favorite parables of all times. Actually tried to explain this to a woman who is Russia, but I guess the decades of indoctrination took their toll. For she didn’t get it, and insisted the state must do something on the subject we were discussing, which was health care and being responsible for yourself by being frugal with your money.

  3. I asked my dad for a bike when I was nine years old. His reply was “son if you want a bike earn the money and go buy one”

My dad never got passed the 8th grade in school. He built the home we lived in with his bare hands. We never went without, and I always thought we were rich.

My dad is gone now, and I still miss him. I was the first to graduate high school in our family. That made him so proud.

That simple statement he made to me so long ago made me what I am today. I’ll always be the ant…and I’ll die a free American.

I still believe we live in the greatest country. I hope we can take it back before it’s to late.

Peerhaps a lot of grass hoppers need to die this winter.

    See Ya

  4. CS-Heard that, I had a similar discussion with similar results!

DiMw- Same here- Neither my mother or dad graduated high school, but I always had a roof over my head and food on the table… Concur on the grasshoppers… 🙂

    Peedee- You’re welcome!

  5. Great analogy and lampooning of the “political expedient crowd”. I personally have no respect for either party, haven’t for years. What’s wrong with a third or even fourth party? The bigger problem is who to believe, no matter the label. We may never see it- Hell, I may run. My first course of action- Nuke em all, including the snail darter! Can I get your vote???

  6. And in every election going forward. We need to put a stake through the heart of liberalism.

  7. Jeff- Agreed! I’ll vote for you! The issue is that conservatism tends to ONLY split the right, the left stays intact… dammit…

    Crucis- Dead on!

  8. Where’s the part about how the ant cut taxes, saved money, had a surplus and the grasshopper (we’ll call GW) declared war, wasted money and spent all the ants surplus, drove the country into the ground, allowed banks to steal all the ants money. Then 8 years later the ant returns and within one year we see the money return, sales increase, unemployment begin to lower, the countries companies begin to hire again and and the economy return. hmmmm, that part seems to be left out.

  9. Ants and Grasshoppers

The ants might be surprised to find out that the grasshoppers are actually willing to work with ants, but ants don’t regard grasshoppers qualified to do ant work, or work in an ant system, so very few grasshoppers are hired.

Grasshopper life expectancy & health are compromised, but the grasshoppers try to make the best of things to enjoy their brief time on the planet, doing whatever work the ants might allow them to do, since the ant has been storing up resources for years, and controls the purse strings of the economy.

Finally some brave and outspoken grasshoppers come along and speak out about the injustices of society; how the ants want to keep all the jobs & resources for themselves, and regard the grasshoppers unworthy to participate on equal terms.

Over the years, the struggle went on, with the grasshoppers gradually gaining equal rights under the law, but so many of the ants continued to isolate themselves and kept their resources to themselves, causing many grasshoppers to remain at a disadvantage.

Eventually, sweet little ants fell in love with sweet little grasshoppers, recognizing each other’s talents and values. They got married and raised families of anthoppers who inherently understood society’s predicament and went out to find practical solutions to the economic situation.

There still remains, however, some bitter ants who only want to gripe about the situation, as well as some grasshoppers who never have and never will understand the satisfaction that comes from personal accomplishments.

The rest of society continues to explore practical solutions, and were even able to elect one of the anthoppers to be the President, who is by the way, doing a splendid job.
