Range Report- Winchester Model 70…

Well, I finally got a chance to go to the range with my ‘new’ rifle. It’s a Winchester Model 70 Coyote in 22-250, with a Leupold 4.5-14×40 scope.

As you can see, I was chasing the wind on a 200x zero… sigh… NOT the way you want to do it, three shot groups are the best way to figure out where you’re shooting! The upper left was the first two rounds, the single on the far right was the third, then I went to three round groups.

I finally got ‘on’ and shot a decent group with the lower right being a wind move- Those little rounds are definitely doing some moving around in the 5-10kt winds we had.

And the final group πŸ™‚

Slightly over 2 inches, so I’d say it’s a one MOA gun. And it’s actually probably better than I shot it. And that little thing is just flat FUN! πŸ™‚ Low recoil, not much barrel deflection thanks to the fluted barrel, excellent trigger and nice smooth bolt!

FWIW, I’d highly recommend it to anybody looking for a small caliber varmint gun!

  1. WSF- Dunno, I need to get a couple of hundred rounds under my belt to feel comfortable with it!

  2. Early morning before the breeze comes up(Β΄round here anyway) then ya can see what ya can do with Β΄er.

what bullets did ya try heavier is better in the wind I donΒ΄t do much with.22Β΄s but I think ya can shoot 70 gr. v-max or varmit masters in a 22-250.

What do ya know about the Front-Sight Institute, I had a comment on your Carbine training piece and was hoping that someone else had knowleage of them, First hand.

  3. Dennis- The barrel has a 14:1 twist, so I don’t believe I can shoot much larger than a 50gr round without it keyholing (but I’m going to try). Re Front Site, I have no personal experience with them, nor do I know anybody that has. Sorry.

    Me- tryin…

Julie- Thanks, YOU need to get some shooty time in too!

    Fuzzy- Yes it is!

drjim- Yep, it’s a quick little round!

FM- lemme get used to it, and I’m planning on bringing it next year!

  5. Mine is a .223 Rem700 “Varmit” with laminated stock. Mine has a barrel with a 1/14″ twist so a 55gr bullet is about the heaviest I can shoot. I tried some 62gr once but they key-holed.

My best is a 2″ group at 200yds but there was no wind. πŸ™‚

  6. that is SOOOO cool! I hope I get to shoot that one someday?

Would’ve been the bee’s knees if you could have joined us this weekend. We’ll try to plan our next party around when you’ll be available, mkay?

  7. Crucis- without wind, I think this one will shoot a 1 inch group…

Phlegmmy- Next year πŸ™‚ We’ll work on it.

  8. CS- It’s definitely a better shooter than I am πŸ™‚

    Julie- Just do it!

    Peedee- After I practice a bit πŸ™‚

  9. I’ve been thinking about the .22-250 recently, too. I would like to shot 68 and 69-grainers out of a 1 in 9 barrel, but I don’t think any factory is making them. It’s a shame, really, because of the abundance of match .223 bullets. With heavier rounds, the .22-250 could perform at least as well as the .308 at distance.

  10. Sorry, been out of town.
    Handloads, or factory?
    Could use some tuning.
