An ‘Interesting’ picture, but not in a good way…

This is something I never thought we’d see, at least not in my lifetime, other that at Christmas stand-down, maybe…

NORFOLK, VA. (February 8, 2013). The first time since WWII that five nuclear powered aircraft carriers were docked together. USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), USS Enterprise (CVN 65), USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), and USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) are all in port at Naval Station Norfolk, Va., the world’s largest naval station. Sources stated that this breached a long standing military protocol in the Navy meant to avoid massive enemy strike on major US forces. (U.S. Navy photo by Chief Mass Communication Specialist Ryan J. Courtade/Released)

Additionally, there are three Amphibs in there too…

Battan (LHD5) fourth up, Wasp (LHD1) sixth up, and Kearsarge (LHD3), so effectively eight big (and bigger) decks all in a row.  And yes it DOES breach protocol, but obviously the administration doesn’t care…

An ‘Interesting’ picture, but not in a good way… — 36 Comments

  1. You can’t have any expensive ships patrolling the seas while Michelle is in the Hollywood mood. Beside that, Obama is starting a 100 city tour, at a tremendous expense, to show how the U.S. needs to stop frivolous spending.

  2. I had this thought while you were posting about the result of this latest D.C. dance . . . . scary as hell!

Just one small nuke and what – 60% of our fleet is gone?? Ya just know that’s gotta me mighty tempting to a bunch of people!!

Watched a couple shows last night about the rise of Hitler, the crap Japan was doing prior to WII, how Mussolini (and Hitler) rose to power during/after the Depression . . . . . makes you wonder if our leaders even briefly review history any more . . . .

  3. What a target for a pre-emptive First Strike! It would make Pearl Harbor look like child’s play.

    Hope it doesn’t happen…

    All The Best,
    Frank W. James

  4. Troubling in so many ways. If I had to pick one big stupid way to set up the USA for a crippling military strike, that would probably be it.

We could lose Congress and not even hiccup. Lose all those ships, and we are dead in the water for force projection.

  5. As the others have said, why in the world are they in one place? Whose the brilliant turd-for-brains that allowed this to happen?

  6. Whenever there was an International Crisis, Bill Clinton would always ask “Where are the Carriers?”

But thanks to the FANTASTIC job his Wife and Obama have accomplished in “Making the World Safer than it has EVER been,” I guess Barry doesn’t have to ask, does he?

  7. Maybe since the DoD is one of the groups that likes to troll the blogs and see what we’ve written (they trolled mine on several occasions) maybe they might learn something this time.

  8. This is alarming. I tweeted this picture just now on my Twitpic account. I hope the patriots see it and raise Heck!

  9. Here is the tweet: Why the HECK is 60% of US Navy sitting together in ONE PLACE. Breaches protocol since Pearl Harbor. #treason #tcot twitpic.com/c70424

  10. I thought the piers looked a little full last weekend when I looked over from the Monitor Merrimac tunnel. Growing up down there during the Cold War, I always knew we were THE target. Who needs the H-bomb when the targets cluster close enough for a suitcase bomb?

  11. The New York(LPD 21) and the Iwo Jima (LHD 7 ) are also in port, along with submarines and smaller ships.

To be fair, the Enterprise is decommissioned, but that still means that 4 of our 10 active aircraft carriers and nearly a third of our amphibious capability is clustered within a mile of shoreline.

  12. As has been mentioned, ‘shades of Pearl’.
And Jay, if they just sit there, they may go underwater too…*grimace*.

    Lord, help us.

  13. Jess- yeah… sigh

    Agirl- And scary…

eia- I wasn’t going there, but yes… Security is WAY up…

Frank- You, me and a lot of folks!

    Carteach- Correct

Matt- No choice, limited bases that can actually ‘take’ large decks… and roger the trolls…

Les- If they’re here, then they can’t hit any muslims… Just sayin…

    Opus- Thanks!

LL- Definitely stinking to high heaven…

    .45ACP+P- Yep, racked and stacked…

Jay- Cause we don’t have enough of them anymore either… And they are also being ‘parked’…

Stephen- Good point, but if they are here… NO power projection…

    WSF- Thanks!

DM- Thanks, I missed those! And you are correct…

Tim- Due to all the base cuts, there is no where else to park em…

    Rev- Yep…

  14. The whole “we have ships that go underwater now” comment was Obama’s response to Romney’s charge that we were gutting the military.

Dismissive, flip, and completely and utterly missing the point.

IOW, just what we’ve come to expect from this vastly empty suit.

With this latest stunt, he’s proven – yet again – that not only does he hold the military in great contempt, but he is practically BEGGING a foreign government to take a shot at us.

A shot they can be pretty well assured we won’t respond to…

  15. US Army and Air Force face the same issue with base closurers.

All the eggs in just a few baskets. The targeting gets easier and easier.

    Gerry

  16. I’m guessing we didn’t dock 5 nuclear powered carriers together during WWII, either.

Just a hunch, really, but I could be wrong.

  17. every one has all ready said what I am thinking..not good having our eggs in one basket. I guess they have forgotten Pearl Harbor.

However-since I have never seen that either, it does make for a cool pic..but one I wish was never taken..

  18. Every day, in every way, Teh 0ne proves himself a very competent sleeper agent. It’s the only explanation that fits his action and inaction.

  19. In fairness, this did happen during a Christmas stand-down, the Enterprise is technically no longer active duty, and the Eisenhower headed out for the Gulf.

Granted, that still means at least three flat-tops are still dawdling in port, along with however many amphibs, which is unquestionably bad, but this one seems to have grown a touch out of proportion.

  20. CP- Yep…

    Jay- Agreed

Gerry- Didn’t know that, but I’m not surprised.

    Anon- F off…

ASM- Yeah, I ‘thought’ about correcting that, but not my job… 🙂

    PH- Yep

JUGM- It ‘does’ happen occasionally, but usually only during Christmas… And not that many at one time….

Stretch- You do have a point…

Linoge- You and I both know it ‘does’ occasionally occur, but not to this level, and no known time when it will end. And you also know it is a violation of the SOP. I don’t believe it’s blown out of proportion, as this DOES show just how vulnerable we are for the time being, not only at home, but overseas.

  21. This is scary beyond belief.

If this “President’s” gutting of our military isn’t treasonous, then not much else is.

They’d rather take long vacations, give out ‘free stuff”, and hobnob with the Hollyweird “elite” than take care of the country.

    My God, what has happened?

  22. JR- That it is…

    Ed- That is truly scary…

drjim- This IS the new mentality…

    Opus- That is great news!!!

    Rick- Yep!
